ford 302, aexaclty how slow?

i posted this on the chat a few nights ago so some may know. my buddys getting out of his turd ranger. he wants something that has some power, he thinks just because it has a v8 its gona be fast so he thinks the 302 will be pretty quick (he knows it wont be real fast but still...) anyway i tell him the 302 will be a turd and get bad mileage and he should at least test drive a chevy. he refuses to test a chevy out and hes never really even driven a v8 so he doesn't really know how ford stacks up with the competition but somehow he is really hung up on the blue oval. so then i tell him atleast look for a 351 or maybe a 460, he seems kindof hung up on the 302 though... i dont know, what do you guys think he should do. the man is obviously confused, he hasn't driven a Chevy, or even any full size truck for that matter.

btw his current car has the 3.0, and if you say a v8 wont be much faster, you may not realize how slow this thing is...

yea, lets try to keep the ripping on ford to a minimum, i want real info. its too easy to knock ford, and trust me, i know what ford quality is... you dont have to tell me lol.

Its almost impossible to find any track times on these things because no one talks about running 17-16 seconds in the quarter... One thing you gotta remember is that they weigh a ton next to all their competition.

It sounds to me like you're beating a dead horse. Let him waste his money on the POS Ford and then beat the pants off of him and then say "I told you so". Some people have to learn the hard way. :sad:

I don't think you're going to change the mind of a dyed-in-the-wool, die-hard Ford (or Chevy, or Dodge, or Nissan) fan. Unless he's twelve years old, present the facts and let him decide...like RedHeartbeat said, he'll learn the hard way.

Wow I misread this completely. I thought he was wanting to put a 302 IN the Ranger. I have a buddy with a '99 F150 with the 5.4 Triton. It is a cool/tough truck but definitely not for racing. I would imagine anything pre-5.4 would be an absolute dog...

I thought we were talking V8 Ranger as well.

yea but he knows im gona whip him no matter what truck he gets in his price range. so i cant really say i told you so.

all his friends including myself drive chevys and he even admits he will never be faster. its like he accepts that ford is junk, yet still likes them. maybe a test drive would change his mind.

Man let him buy the ford!! I have to tell you in the video of me vs. the Tundra it feels great to beat someone by so many lengths that they are not even in the video when you break the beams!

i have no doubt i will blow his doors of, in his price range he poses no threat to me with a ford or a chevy. so i would rather see him get a older slow tbi chevy then a turd mega slow 302... oh well, hes just another ignorant ford fan. he has yet to back up why he likes ford with any reason at all. if he wants to be dumb about it he deserves to make that mistake again, maybe after two times his next truck will be a gm.

I am with Quik. A nicely modded 302 would move a little Ranger around pretty damn well. A 351 and 460 are not performance motors by any means. They are freakin heavy ass truck motors with low compression that put out good amounts of low end torque--for a Ford POS motor. IMHO, the last good motor Ford made WAS the 302...

But when you say 'car,' what car is it? The only thing I remember Ford putting the lethargic 3.0L motor in was the 4-door Tempo, first Gen Probe, and the Taurus... But then I look back to see that in your first post, you call it a 'turd Ranger...'

i refer to the ranger as a car, as it has no capabilities you would expect from a truck, is very cramped, and low to the ground. i can honestly say a vw bug is much roomyer inside and faster, sad. i dont think the 351 is too bad of a motor, there is alot of aftermarket for it just like the 302, only the 302 is TINY. 330 is about all you can even get out of that little block. good motor for a mustang, not a truck imo. hes dead set on this one truck now... sclb 4x4 94 with a 302 and whatever auto they had, i think hes going to look at it this weekend.

A 351 Windsor can be built up to a potent 408" engine. We all know he'll never do it but it does have potential.
