How many miles do you drive a month? The 1st and 2nd 408 I had in my truck used a quart of oil per fuel tank. :grr: This new engine doesn't do that anymore.
Damm Thats Funny Cause Just Checked Mine And It Was A Quart Low?
I drive about 40 miles a day...so...1200 a month give or take?
Last time my oil light came on. Checked the oil and it wasn't even on the stick. Kind of sucks running AMSOIL at $6 a quart...
Im using a quart every 3 to 5k miles....has since it was new
I have heard of v8's loosing oil because of wallowing in the cylinders. after so many miles the pistons wear into the cylinder walls and that creats blowby. not sure if that is what your problem is but just a thought. btw when I chang my oil after 3k miles it still reads full... I have 68k miles now.
Weird. My Z71 didn't burn any. Not a spot of oil in the garage either.
Not trying to hijack the thread guys, but my friends truck eats oil too, and when we took off his intake manifold it had an oil film all on the inside of it and down the intake ports of the heads. It looked like it was sucking up the oil through his valve covers?? It eats about 1/3 a quart a month.
Ive taken my intake off twice now for head swaps and i havent had a single drop of oil in my intake or my intake ports on my heads. We both still have our baffers on our valve covers too. Any thoughts to this?
what about a PCV problem?? thats where i see most Oil being sucked into an intake... I dont have enough miles on my 410 to talk of any issue... but I would think if its going to use oil it might be early on or towards the end of its life...I just checked mine last night and it hasnt moved on the stick...
My 5.3 uses about 1/3 of a quart every 3 to 5k also. I have 109,000 on it. Its not leaking anywhere and there is no residue on anything. It still runs like a champ. This may be normal but a quart a month seems a little high!
I havent lost any oil...doesn't drip anywhere either...course its only got 35K miles on it...Hope you figure it out Moze
yeah, I did that, too. Cheap autozone push-on crankcase filters work great.
Ya, my 408 uses a quart per 3-4k miles.
engines develope a lot of positive crankcase pressure when running. The higher performance engines create even more. At high RPM the oil gets vaporized into small molecules and float all over the inside of the engine in a gaseous state. The PCV valve has a vacuum hose going to the engine that draws that vaporized oil and pressure into the intake manifold and then burns it, remember that dirty intake manifold problem you had a while back, that was from the vapors. Instead of drawing those vapors into the intake you put small air filters on the locations where the large vacuum lines connect to the valve covers and vent the crankcase pressure to the atmosphere. In return you get a cleaner running engine and less oil consumption.
i went from using a quart ever 2000 miles to no oil loss just by putting on breathers instead of using the pcv system.
Greg is absolutely correct. That is the cheapest and easiest way to eliminate that problem. Or you could do a PCV catch can. A Catch Can just temporarily stores the oil. AMW makes a good product, but it is quite pricey...
are you just supposed to leave the hoses unhooked and do nothing about them?
Cap the hose off at the manifold.
WEIRD....Greg--your current post count is 11,111.
Or do a catch can use the hoses...
I'm going through about a quart every 6k so I'm going to make my weekend project to do that. I can only imagine what the inside of my intake looks like:(
may or may not be true, but i read on one website that changing from full synthetic to synthetic blend will possibly cure an oil consumption problem. I'm going to try it in two of my familys vehicles next oil change.
i had so much crankcase pressure that it was blowing past the rear seal causing a leak. it only did it when i got on it though. i removed the pvc hose which wasnt letting enough of the pressue out and the leak went away.
i still need to get a filter or something put on it but its been fine running open for now.
the PVC system is a terrible way of dealing with unburnt gases. half burnt vapors running back up thru the intake makes it filthy and it gets all over the injectors also.
a catch can works well or like greg said just put a filter on it.
Oil Catch Can
its basically just an air compressor filter that you would use to trap the moisture in the line for spraying paints. you can get one at home depot or lowes usually.

Corvette PCV Oil Catch Can
I'm guessing one breather takes the place of the PCV valve and the other takes the place of the oil fill tube. Seems like the only two logical places to me.
Each valve cover has a barb fitting with a hose leading to the intake manifold. Driver's side is back towards the firewall, and the pass side is up at the front.
Here is my setup
Pass side rear

Pass front

The front of the intake and the rear of the pass side both t into a line that goes to the pcv valve. Do these lines go away? Then a filter goes on the fitting at the rear of pass side and one takes the place of the pcv valve and then cap off the intake? Then I remove the line that goes to the tb and another filter goes on the fitting at the front of pass side and then cap off the tb? Does this sound right or is there more to it?
You could put a filter after the "T" in the line before it goes into the top of the intake...and then cap off the TB. Or just get a Catch Can and not deal with having filters everywhere and dealing with securely capping off lines and plugging up holes...
I guess I explained my self wrong. My bad. From the driver rear where the pcv valve is one line comes off of it and that line "Y"s to the rear of the pass side and the other line goes to the front of the intake. The front pass is independent of these lines which goes to the tb. So I guess if I wanted to do anything I could put a filter where the pcv valve is and one on the rear pass side. Cap the intake, tb, and the front of the pass side. As far as the whole catch can thing it might be a better way to go but I have never seen this done nor would I know where to start so the filter option seems a little more doable.
2 different engines. The original 5.3 and now the 6.0. I have never had to add a drop of oil.
(Napoleon Dynamite voice) LUCKY!!!...
out of 3 lx motors and a combined 170000 miles haven't burned one drop, and i drive my vehicles hard
Where's your old vehicle. I want to buy it. An engine with 170k on it that doesn't burn one drop of oil will be worth millions to research departments in Michigan.
