I have a 2006 4.8 will my fuel lines work with the 6.0 and Is the motor mounts the same etc
ok and is the 2006 6.0 a cluth driven fan or do they have electric fans
Electric fans...
2006 van has a manual fan, 2008, also. :grr:
ok cause this salvage yard im getting my engine from tried to give me one that had a clutch driven fan on it..i said dont they have electric fans and then he was like o we must have brough the wrong engine. ya bs he was just trying to rip me off. and do i need to swap my flywheel
FWIW, the van engines still have a waterpump driven fan all the way up in 2008 and further i am sure. I know for a fact the 2008 model van has the WP driven fan. :twocents:
2500's still have mechanical fans too
Wow some good info here!!
I have a 2001 1500 4.3 auto 134k miles.
The engine is getting tired and I flat tow my CJ7 and I would like a bit more power on the hills.
Just a short recap: 4.3 to a 2001-2006 5.3 swap
I can keep the transmission (Just got rebuilt a few months ago)?
My 4.3 PCM reflashed for the 5.3? Better if I can get the ORG PCM for the 5.3 being purchased?
I can use the org engine mounts?
New fan shroud
New hard fuel lines? (frame to engine)
Keep org alternator?
Missing anything?
Thanks,
Carnell
p.s I found a 5.3 (with pcm) for $675 out of a 2001 Tahoe. Not sure how many miles but I have time to do a mild rebuild if needed.
I can't spend anymore then 1k for a engine. Is that reasonable?
You can keep the transmission, no change from auto to auto.
Go ahead and get the 411 pcm if you can. I switched PCMs when i did mine. When you get a tune they will just ask for a 4.3 core, so its no biggy to use which ever tuners PCM they provide.
Can't use the engine mounts, make sure you get the right set.
Get electric fans, more room, better cooling. ESPECIALLY for towing.
I bought 2(1 foot) steel braided fuel lines. Cut the hard lines like a few inches down from the intake, installed the hardlines and put them onto the fuel rail for the 5.3. WAY cheaper adn easier then replacing the entire fuel line assembly.
Same alternator.
Probably some odds adn ends you will run into when doing the swap. Nothing that you cant find at a junkyard or a dealer trip at all.
675 is a real good deal. I got a 5.3 for 700 with out a harness and a few other misc things
Thanks for the above info. This is really going to help.
With the used 5.3, any cheap upgrades before I install the engine? I see some talk about a cam upgrade????
Thanks again
Carnell
Yeah if the engine is already out, itd be really easy to just toss a cam in there. Figure out if you wanna boost it or stay NA first. COuple other bolt ons probably, just figure out which direction your going with the truck first I guess
Just as my Dad would say "keep it simple stupid"
I'm just looking for a little more power and a simple rebuild for longer life. Truck is paid for so it's sticking around. I'm not looking at the quarter mile or chirping the tires
from what i've seen, the comp 212/218 drives pretty much like stock + 20-30hp with a good tune & some long tubes. i wish i'd done that when my engine was out - now, i never can seem to find the time or money.
Are the comp 121/218 camshafts?
Also, if the 5.3l is the same year as my truck, will there need to be changes on the 5.3 wiring harness prior to the install?
Thanks
Carnell
p.s. What do you do at NAS Pensacola?
i have a 2003 4.3 its dbc, do i need to get a dbc harness or a dbw??? id like to keep the cable and not have to mess with the dbw, dont u have to have the gas pedal and mount and all to make it dbw??? THANKS!
it's a camshaft - 212/218 are the intake/exhaust valve lift specs, which are what cams are generally referred to by
for the harness, so long as both you & the donor use the same transmission, you shouldn't have to change anything that i know of
you can do the DBC swap on a newer motor, but i don't remember what all's involved. search around & you'll come across where people've done it before
Thanks for the info. I'm still shopping for a engine. A local guy has a 02 Tahoe with 87k and he wants 800 for the engine including wiring harness and comp. I'm not sure if I want to pull the trigger.
If the Tahoe has a different transmission? Can I send the harness off the new engine to nelson tune for them to make the mods?
Carnell
same 4L60 in the tahoe - you're good to go. just check to see if the hoe has traction control or not - yes=DBW, no=DBC
and Nelson can do harness work (not that you'd need any - assuming the one they send is good). Current Performance Wiring did mine & i'm happy with it
If the donor has traction control and my truck dosent, is that an issue?
traction control means it has the electronic throttle body, if i remember right. you'd need to work out the conversion to one or the other
Ok, I'm not sure I know the differance between the two throttle bodys but I'll ask and make the changes if I need too.
I'm calling the wrecking yard tomorrow to tell them to start pulling the motor. I'll start a thread when I get it. it will be a month before I start putting it in. I still need to get engine mounts and all the other small stuff.
Thanks guys for your help. I really appreciate it
Carnell
Zebra i have ALOT!!! i called Nelson perf. today and they they would make a completely new custom harness for $650!!! OR i could send them a cable harness and make it work with my 03 for $450!!! im on a tight budget!! i can do either but i would rather save that $$$ for some LT's and a cam, ive read that if u have a 03+ truck u need to make it dbw cuz thats what all the 03+ v8 trucks are.. someone tell me what i need to do!!! LOL... cuz im LOST!!
OMFG this has been covered in a few threads. Make it DBW it's so much easier to just replace the gas pedal.
Ok frenchy!..but im still a lil lost!! lol... i dont have cruise on my truck, its a W/T... So i just need to get the engine harness off a 03+ v8,the pedal assembly and the box that bolts on the firewall..i dont need the fuse box from the v8 in the engine compartment?? everthing will plug into my fuse box? THANKS for yalls help! and my pcm can be tuned to work with the v8 and new harness correct?, its blue/green plug in.. geeezz this is confusing!! lol
Yeah mine's bare bones too, best thing to do is get everything and I mean everything under the hood from the V8 truck. I got my entire package which had 12000 miles on it for $1300. Got a new flywheel because my truck is a 5speed, removed some unnecessary wires from the harness (again, because of the 5speed) and converting to DBW. If you use parts from the same year truck as yours it makes life easy too. Mine's an 06, all the V8 stuff is 05. You could use 03-04 and it be the same. 05-07 Classic have some slight differences nothing major. But again less headache if use same year parts.
Correct me if Im wrong, I could also use a dbc motor in my 05, with a 02 computer and run a 05 harness. If I modded the harness to work with the dbc set up?
Do any of you swappers still have your '99-'06 4.3 exhaust manifolds laying around?
that boat anchor's been sitting outside at the shop for a year, so i doubt you'd want mine
A little surface rust wouldn't be too bad, so long as it hasn't progressed to serious pitting. The issue is the distance. We couldn't be much farther apart.
well they're actually back home in middle TN, if that's closer
Well my wife picked up the 5.3L that was pulled out of a 01 tahoe. I pulled it out of the back of my truck today and I was a a bit bummed. I paid $800 for the engine to include wiring harness and PCM. Well when I got the engine out of the back of my truck, I found that they cut all the wires going aft of the engine that would have gone to the transmission and firewall etc... Whats the point.... I'm going to give the guys a call on Monday and my guess is that they will take of the connections and hand it to me to splice. the other item is 2 broken ignition modules, one on each side. It's obvious they broke them when they installed the chain to left the engine out. WTF... I'm not happy with how this is starting out. Here are some pictures of us getting the engine out of the back of the truck......
I have a few questions. Im in the middle of the swap right now, after putting everything toghter we went too install the torque converter bolts, the motor was locked. We figured out the torque converter was hitting the flywheel. We removed the tranny and motor spins fine.
I used the 4l60E that was bolted too my 4.3 motor, i also used that converter. What flywheel am i suppouse too use? The 4.3 flywheel bolts are off center on the 5.3 motor. Any help would be apprciated.
Also the DBW is their a write up on that anywhere, i searched. Problem there is the truck was cable before, but the swap i bought is DBW, i looked under the dash how doo you remove the old pedal? can i just cut it out and bolt the DBW one up?
use the 5.3 flexplate & make sure it's on the right way. i don't think they'll go on backwards, but there's no harm in checking
yeah. don't compare it to the 4.3 stuff - they're gonna be different. as far as i know, the ls truck engines used the same flexplate from year to year (specific to the transmission, obviously). you'd get some clearer info from somebody who's worked with automatics - which is pretty much everybody else here
You cannot use the old converter on the Gen3 flexplate without a convertor extension or custom convertor. You may have to slot the holes in the flexplate to line up with the convertor. Hughes makes an extension for the convertor center pin
Contact CircleD, site sponsor on the front page, and tell them what you're doing and they can build you a convertor.
