Neutral safety switch and fuel gauge on 98 swap

wtfan18, set the tach resolution to 3 instead of 6 in the PCM and the tach will work. Make sure you have the tach hooked to pin 10 white wire on the C2 Red connector.

ChevyLee, there's no reason the gas gauge shouldn't be working unless the sender is bad in the tank or the wiring isn't correct. Check the wiring coming from the sending unit on top of the pump. GM had problems with the connector going bad and you might be able to wiggle it to see if it has a bad ground or broke wire. Does the fuel gauge read full, empty or bounce? If it's showing full you probably have a bad ground.

on my stock cluster it read emtpy and would bounce when giving it gas after about half a tank. now its stuck on full with the 2000 cluster.
The 98 cluster wanted the tack for 3.5 which it couldnt be set at. but this new one wants 3, so it works good.

so bad ground you think? ill have to pull the tanky an take a look?

It still sounds like a wiring issue, check your connections one more time from the pump to the cluster. Glad to hear your making progress!

I think I'm gonna find another untouched 4.3 harness, and buy a nelson or other 5.3 harness and start over.

I got mad at myself for almost giving up and pretty much finished it :lol: Most of it was way too easy once I calmed down. I might start pulling the extra 4x4 wires etc out of the 5.3 harness before long

Did anyone ever figure out
1)why the gas gauge reads pegged all the way past full
2)why the gear indicator only works in P R and 1

Also, what do I need to do to connect the 5.3 pcm to the OBD2 connector in the truck? I was told it's just one wire?

The gear indicator works off of the black box on the side of the tranny right? I wondered if it was different internally than the one on the 5.3 and I should swap that box to fix the indicator.

it works off of this, and i used the one from my stock tranny 4l60e with a 4.3 98 and its doing the same thing as the new one i have that was with the80e tranny. here is a pic. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...rtsheaders.jpg

anyway they should all be the same.

Well, you saved me some work. i can live with this but i need to figure out the gas gauge. I would this it was grounded through the pcm in an indirect way or something, and the removed wiring removed the power or ground for the gauge. My tach in the 98 works fine BTW. Are you using the stock V6 O2 sensors or did you change them out? I have been trying to lay all of this out in writeup form as I go, and it's come along pretty good as I've worked my problems out. I still have to get the ABS working too, I guess i have more little things left than I realize

yeah i need to figure my gas guage out as well. its pegged way past full. my new tune is coming this week with the resolution of the pcm changed to 3. i bought 02 sensors for the 5.3.... and threw away the 4.3 sensors. they were nasty anyways. my abs light comes on when i touch the breaks. i may figure it out sometime or ill just pull the bulb... it really is all the little things that make it miserable. i really really really really want my gas guage to work though lol...
