Running tr6 right now, what's the difference?
Just a step colder and non-projected. But slap some plugs in and scan that thing. I don't see how you could've hurt it on 10psi unless your tune was off
Update , on every start up the truck struggles to idle and blows blueish black smoke everywhere . You can rev it up and it will quit smoking and clear up. But as soon as you kill it and start it back up it does the same thing.
We can't find anything in the tune but on start up it is pig rich, 10 on the wide band.
Hmm mine is funky on startup but prolly bc my roommate and I don't know know how to idle tune. It running rich would explain the rough startup but idk about the smoke. Is it blue smoking on startup or just black smoke? Could also be bc you have a dead cylinder but compression wasn't too bad. You put new plugs in?
New plugs, I'm thinking its fuel probs. Its black smoke so bad its killing the shit out of my grass every time I park it somewhere and start it up lol. It surely can't be tune related since it was fine before..... ?
Man idk. Hopefully somebody can chime in
With the smoke does it have a "metallic" weird taste? Do you have a test light or noir lights to make sure injectors are pulsing and not getting constant signal. Possible injector stuck open? When I was working out the base idle tune on my megasquirted turbo neon had similar issues but weird that you're truck was fine and now acting up. Leads me to mechanical. On you single low cylinder pull plug see if there is oil again also drop little bit of oil into cycle and do a compression check. If pressure comes up quite a bit prob a ring problem. Just throwing out possibilities.
I'm gonna check injectors tonight. I'll make sure they're pulsing and probably go ahead and pull them out and clean them . I did notice when we had the comp hooked up to it that it took a while for the o2 sensors to warm up and start reading properly.
Check coolant and air temp sensors make sure they are reading properly. Computer could be putting more fuel in if it thinks ambient is -20 below... Should only take the ecm a few moments to go into closed loop.
Just bought new coolant temp sensor. Air temp sensor? I thought the maf read the air temp?
it does but who uses a maf these days pfffff
I do ! Lol
I really didn't read the entire post but first thing, do a compression test.
Could be a broken ring land or cracked piston.
Typically a minor piston break doesn't cause any bore damage.
On budget repairs I've seen single pistons replaced. Quick hand hone. New rings. Slap another piston in and be done.
However most do a full rebuild and upgrade.
You might even get a used piston for free from someone.
Just considering the options. Let us know!
Temp sensor!! 10 bucks and 15 min later the truck fires right up and idles like a champ! No more smoke!
Its weird how one small cheap part can cause a huge headache of a mess to figure out when you think your vehicle is done for.
very nice!! I knew you didnt hurt that 5.3 on only 10psi with an on3 turbo.
Got the engine running good, spooled rear end , lowered it 3 inches, and the th400 with 3600 stall is almost complete. Planning on running the shit out of it Nov 3rd at a local street truck shootout!
very nice!! What rearend do you have? I thought there is no spool options for the 8.6
Mini spool in the factory rear end. Buddy of mine gave it to me.
where did he get the mini spool from?
Some machine shop. I seen where someone had done some machining to make the c clips fit so.... chances are it is for a different application but modified to fit an 8.6.
What is your goal/expectation for the local shootout?
Awesome man. At least some of those ase tests paid off for some one
Hmm wonder who that can be... Well last week I also found out I was 2 qts low on tranny fluid so I topped it off and its running really good. Cant wait for some 60* nights with 15+ psi. Gonna be 10s for sure. I have no doubt you'll be comfortably in the 11's. How much timing are you running?
17 degrees on 10 lbs. Its about 70 degrees and they're running pro mod at hub city tonight.
I'm running 16* with 10-12 on the street and 16 at 14psi with a couple gallons of 110 at the track. You need to see what that thing does
Were gonna try 16lbs at the truck shootout Nov 3rd. Its only 1/8 mile so I figure that would be a good time to try it.
Should move out pretty good. I plan to up the boost next time out. Hopefully it'll be a cool night. That's what I'm really waiting for. It was 90* with high humidity when I ran the 11.4 and by the last half of the track my iat's were 151 and it was only giving it 10* of timing. Still conservative but its got more in it. I'm thinking 16psi and 14-15* with some 110 in it. Should be able to break 10s with some good air. How much timing you gonna run with 16#? And what fuel?
Probably gonna run straight 110 not to sure on the timing, whatever my tuner feels comfortable with. I've got to get some factory rims and slicks. I think the th400 and higher stall is really gonna make a difference, especially when it leaves out. You leaving on boost?
With 110 I would run at least 16* no doubt. I'm running a msd 2step on the foot brake and leaving at 6psi. I did a drum swap so my rear braking isn't as good so I may have to run hydoboost to build the same boost. But with my 28x10 Hoosiers on stock rims I cut a 1.63 60' on 11psi but on 14psi I spun to the 60' and cut a 1.77. I may fool with the 2step to see if I can get it to hook better or sell my stock rims and slicks and buy some 15x10 steelies and new slicks. Ill holler at you if I decide to sell them and ill make you a good deal. I have some 325/50/15 nitto drag radials on the way for the street but may see what they will do at the track
That would be awesome , keep me posted! I been thinking about grinding down my calipers to fit 15's but I just don't like the idea of weakening my calipers .
Yea ill let you know for sure. I didn't want to grind especially bc the steelies I'm running have less clearance than bogarts so I would've prolly had to grind to the pads lol. But they are only $110 a piece
