cool sweet write up. this might be one of my next mods over the winter.
Worth every penny!!!
Thanks..very helpful post...
very helpful thread! i installed a vette servo today its one fast, easy, and low cost mod.
So which servo do i need to buy for an 04 silverado with a 4.8? is this mod worth it? Could i install this my self with no prior tranny work knowledge?
All 4l60e's take the same servos. Few tips.
1. Have extra cover orings. Usually when you remove the cover, you have to destroy the oring. Test fit the assembly before you put the oring on the cover. Make sure the servo assembly compresses about 2 inches when installed. if its stiff and wont compress, take it back out. (hence why you dont put oring on cover.)
2. Make sure you install the rings right.
3. dont bend the clip that holds the assembly in the tranny.
Do the Vette servo swap. You can get them most anywhere. I get mine from OregonPerformanceTransmissions.com . Be sure the wiper style oring on the last piston you install has the edges pointing outwards of the transmission, towards the inside of the cap that it fits within.
Anyone can do this assembly with patience and a cool engine.
well ordered it today from oregon. Cost 20.50 shipped
I know this topic is about the billet servo, but I thought I would add that I just installed a vette servo into my 06 4l60e and the parts looked exactly the same. Vettte servos being stock parts in newer transmissions may be worth looking into if your planning to instal one.
I've wondered that myself. I've heard some already have them but I have not been able to confirm which years and models.
I can say that the parts on the billet kit were different enough to confuse wuite a few people. Now, the vettes appearantly are close to stock.
Tell you what. I have billets in my v6 truck, I want to put them in the vette since I have a th400 for the truck. SO when I take out the vettes servos I will take pictures of it compared to the billets. If you would like.
awesome idea bro, I think everyone could benefit from this
Good idea Jeff but the way I read it and the way I responded was that the stock parts might be the same as the "Vette" parts in some transmissions.
I do but not sure which ones.
well considering how cheap the vette servos are, it cant be a bad idea to swap it out
The transmission teacher from my school also told me that most of our trucks already had vette servos but i didnt believe him because so many poeple have done it...He ended up losing a 15 dollar bet and owed me a set of servo's but i think its definetly worth trying...only takes 30 minutes and we you can spend $300 on a K&N then we can surely spend $15 on some servo's!
I do not think that the vet servo came in any of the trucks from the factory. I could be wrong but it does come in the Vet, GTO, F-body, and caprice/b-body. The one that most guys confuse with a vet servo is what I refer to as the 4l70E TBSS servo listed below. However I thought I would post a couple pic's of the different servos. Sorry I did not take the measurements of these servos. I did line them up so you guy's could see the various sizes found in GM vehicles. (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT) Here is a photo of a sonnax super hold second servo, the Corvette servo, the 4l70e TBSS servo, a 553 full size truck/car servo, and the 554 servo found in light duty S10 vehicles. All of the servos are OE except for the first servo from sonnax.

Here is a photo of the Sonnax 2nd, the vette 2nd and the 4l70e TBSS 2nd servo.

Hope this helps. Vince B
cool vince. Thanx. Ill still show mine when I swap them to add to the flavor.
My billets lookd different
Well I checked out the servo I pulled from the transmission(2006 I think, don't have a clue what it came out of) and it looks just like the vette servo pictured in the earlier post. I did buy my trans. used so it's possible that the previous owner could have swapped in a vette servo.
I just tried to install my sonnax 2nd and 4th super hold servos...i put it together the way the instructions said and I couldn't push it in far enough to get the spring clip back on so I took it back out and put them next to the stock servos and the sonnax ones are about 1/4" thicker? I tried to use the stock pin and still the same? The servos I got are part #'s 77911-03k(2nd) and 77767k(4th)...are these right? Back to stock for now till I get this straightened out so please help!
sounds like something isn't assembled correctly. You don't have room to spare inside there for 1/4" wider assembly.
I'm pretty sure i put it together right...atleast by the directions that came with the servos. I'm lost!
i still dont have the balls to do this. never touched internals of anything engine tranny wise
There is a circlip for the main pin that should fit inside one of the servos. Did you watch the videos I made showing how this style assembles? It may be a totally different design but they have the same idea in mind.
On mine you have to use the oem cushion spring, retainer and snap ring then the servo then seperator then 4th gear release spring then 4th gear spring retainer then stock e clip then 4th gear servo washer then servo/cover...when done this way it wont fit on either the pin they gave me or the stock!? I'll try to get a pic of the paperwork they gave me
Try reading the directions again. If you read the directions for the second servo you will read that you might have to modify the the servo apply pin. In most cases I have had to do this and it works. If when you did this with the factory pin I would make sure that the return spring is in it's proper location. Also make sure all the seals are properly installed and that the bore and seals are well lubricated. Maybe try to install the assembly without the seals first. Also make sure that you have the cover for the second servo facing the correct way. Vince
I do see that in the directions but if i take off as much as needed i'll have to take the whole tip of the pin...i dont think something is right!? I'm gonna b pulling the tranny to put my converter in tomorrow night after work so while i have it out i'll try it again. What brand servos were used in the video? Mine look nothing like them...mine are two piece like those but they second one slides over the a hub on the first one
PATC/Superior
post up pics of what you have along with instructions and an assembled view of what you're messing with. Maybe we can fingure something out.
Yeah those are the instructions...the new servo is alot longer than what i have in there now
can you take a picture of how you have it assembled?
I'm thinking the cover for the second servo is on back wards. Or possibly the spring that goes in front of the 2-3 accumulator plate is not in the correct position here. Meaning between the plate and the case if that makes sense. Vince B
