David I had a buddy with the same jeep just not outlander, and his CV's were toast when he bought it. It made a noise similar to what you're explaining on both sides. I would give em a good look over before I went any farther.

2002 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Constant Velocity (CV) drive axle
Obvioulsy you would want new. I thought they cost mroe than that though. I would guess 50-100 depending on supplier then.
Real simple, wheel off, brakes off, 32 or 36 mm axle nut off, remove wheel bearing (3 14 mm 12 point bolts), slide axle out and reassemble with new part. Prob 1 hr per side.

What should I check for first before buying these? Should I take off the plastic wheel well cover to make sure its not rubbing? And then what?
Put on 4 jack stands under axles to keep suspension compressed. Obvioulsy making sure that all 4 tires are off the ground.
Have some one turn wheel back and forth while wheels are turning.
See if noise is still there even. Evaluate from there, try to pinpoint.
David, don't forget if you need to do any of this I have lifts that are available...:naughty:
