It really is a kick-ass swap. We're doing one in a C4 Corvette for Corvette Fever magazine, and when we first proposed using a 5.3, we had the usual assortment of naysayers questioning the wisdom of replacing a 5.7-liter engine with a 5.3. The thing they overlooked is that if you pull a Tuned Port out of a Corvette, do nothing to a 5.3 but install it, you get an increase of 40+ horsepower. Add a mild cam and ported heads and it's more like a 100-hp increase. Of course if you use a 5.7, 6.0 or 6.2-liter engine, there's even more power on tap. It's just hard to pass on a 5.3 when you can buy a complete engine with accessories and PCM for less than $750. At the other end of the price spectrum is the LS7-- it's obviously not cheap but with a rating of 505 horsepower, it's fun to think about.
A truck or SUV swap is relatively easy because there's more working room. You have good reason to be excited.
