I have an 86 silverado. With a tired 305/th350
It will keep running hopefully for awhile longer. This is my "toy". Only drive it every so often.
My future plans are to do a late model FI engine swap, along with a new rearend and tranny.
I have been looking at tons of crate motors, I know I want to go FI.
I see a lot of mention of the lq9, seems like a good choice.
My questions are...For me to go FI, I need the motor, harness, and computer(at the very least).
Let's say I buy a brand new crate lq9, where/who would I go to for the computer, and would I need a custom harness?
As for the tranny, could I go with a stout 700r4? Or would it be better to go with a newer electronic tranny? That would also require a computer? Seperate?
I want something very reliable, and with some pep. Been having a hard time finding any shops locally that deal with this, so I turn to you guys, the experts. I have been reading these forums a lot lately, a little too much, stay up too late. :)
I also plan on dropping the truck maybe 3/5 and add some wheels, and maybe disc brakes.
I'd like to choose a motor that will fit without any cutting on the frame for exhaust clearance.
Thanks for any help.

Any GM dealer can get you an engine. Shop around, they all have different prices. I like Scoggins Dickey but shipping may be pricey to your location. GMPARTSDIRECT.COM has awesome prices but they will rape you on shipping and handling. Look around, you can get them all over the internet or just go to you corner GM dealer and order one. NelsonPerformance.com, site sponsor, can build you a harness exactly how you need it and add length to the wiring so that you can mount it anywhere you like. They can also wire it up so that it hooks directly into a 4L60E, 4L65E or 4L80E transmission. Allen can also program you a PCM to make it run with all smog items remove from the diagnostics plus he can throw one hell of a base tune into it to make that baby scream!

thx...
my question about the tranny...I'm not sure what would suit my needs more, a 700r4 or EL series. This truck is just a weekend driver. This will be my first project, and just not sure which way I should go.

get the 4L65E transmission. It will bolt right up and handle all the power you're going to be throwing at it, if built correctly.
