I'm new to this site and have really found it informative. Can anybody tell me how to wire the alternator using the factory gauge? I read on another web site that for the alternator to work properly it has to have a certain amount of resistance in the wire circut. If it doesn't the alternator will overcharge and burn itself up.It said if using the idiot light it provided the proper amount of resistance for the alternator to work properly. Any truth in this? Can any body tell me the proper way to hook it up to the factory gaugein a 84 truck? Thanks Danny

If it is not an amp meter then it has nothing to do with the charging circuit. A volt meter can measure anywhere in the circuit.

There are a few diffrent conectors for the gen III alternator. One conector may have to have resistance and the other like on my truck does not. I have seen guys just hook up a light or LED in line to the alternator to give it the proper resistance. The sig. wire from the PCM can work many diffrent ways, so GM just made a alt. to work for all the GEN III PCM's. You sig wire can be hooked up to a few differnt pins on the alt. One pin will have to have some resistance and the other won't. ( I work next to a alternator shop. The guy pumped me with all kinds of info. I did not need to know.) :laugh:
My guage is just hooked up to a acc. wire. Reads great! :thumb:
