Remote tranny filter install

Okay, so i was gonna do my Transgo/trans work this weekend, but the new LPW pan didn't show up :whack: So instead of sitting around feeling sorry for myself, i decided to go ahead and install a Perma-Cool remote transmission filter. Not real exciting stuff, but it'll please Hit Man :smile:

The kit included:

- Remote filter mount
- Perma-Cool filter
- 2 3/8" x 1/4" NPT male elbow fittings
- 1 3/8" x 1/4" NPT male straight fitting
- 4' of pretty nice hose
- 4 clamps
- 3 sheet metal screws

After surveying the situation, i decided mount it on outside of the frame (passenger side) right by the cross-member. I also decided to cut the supply line at the rubber hose (between the 2 steel lines) and splice in the filter.

To do this i needed a couple of extra items:

- Shorter filter
- Mounting plate (made by me from 1/8' aluminum bar stock)
- 1 3/8" x 1/4" NPT female straight fitting
- 1 3/8" x 1/4" NPT male straight fitting (i didn't like the one that came w/ the kit)
- 1 3/8" hose mender
- 3 bolts/nuts/washers
- 2 quick connect clamps

Another top view showing better how the lines are run. I used the elbow from the kit and the female straight fitting to make a mender for the return line from the filter. You can see that better in the next pic.

A good view of the splices. The return line from the filter (on the right) is coming "towards" you and then "up" to the radiator cooler.

So it will use a regular oil filter?

Hey kirkrhughes, how's it going! Someone finally asked me a question about this really captivating mod :smile: My feelings were starting to get hurt :cry: :smile:

Anyhow, it uses a 'Ford Type' filter w/ 3/4-16 threads. The install sheet had a little matrix of compatible filters for both normal and "tight" fit. Wix was one of the choices. The kit came w/ a Perma-Cool filter, but it looked kind of "STPish" and i use CarQuest (equals Wix), so cool. I went w/ a shorter CarQuest so it would "tuck" into its mounting location better.

I've been thinking about doing the oil filter relocation and maybe a cooler too, now I can add the trans filter to the list too.

Cool. Like i said, the remote trans filter deal isn't all that sexy, but it's sure gonna help clean the fluid much much better than the pan filter, and it added fluid to the overall capacity.

Yeah, i really like the idea of the remote oil filter setup. The AMSOIL Bypass kit looks like the best of the bunch, but not cheap. Which one are you looking at?

Was looking at the Perma-Cool on JCWhitney $44.99 for the single. If I do get one I will probably mount it with the filter upside down, already have to put 6 quarts of oil in the thing.

Ah, here this is at. An actual filter on the trans, more capacity by around a quart, and pics!

That mounting area is about where I was thinking too. :smile:
