Can be used but bearings need to be swapped too.
You can put an 8.5 ring/pinion in place of the 8.6's, but I don't think you can go the other way. When we set up my gears the 8.5 had more backlash than the 8.6 did, i.e. the 8.6 is set up tighter. I would say they would be the same to set up not really harder, just a touch more time involved getting the 8.6's backlash right since it's a bit tighter.

They are the same.... and backlash settings are the same.....The difference is the carrier bearings, they make bearings that will allow a 8.5 carrier to work in a 8.6 rear end but not the other way...
.008-.012 is the settings for 8.5/8.6

FWIW I would put the BL at more like 4 or 5 if using GM gears and 8.6 stuff but no one here probably would so....
got a good deal on 4.10 8.6 from rons machine shop
