Fresh motor break in

OK, OK...
This is a question that gets more different answers than I can count. My fresh forged motor, how long should I break it in? I have 400 miles on her, 20 + heat cycles, almost all below 4,000 RPMs (it might have slipped once to 4,500 :rolleyes:).

I was trying to hold out for at least 500 miles, but some say 1,000. What should I do?

PS - I do intend for this motor to last AT LEAST as long as the stocker did!!

As long as oil pressure is good, no KR, a/f ratio good, do it. But I think you said it was kind of lean, it needs to be 12.8 at wot.

I dunno I would at least say 1000. You spent alot of money and time on this. Plus its brand new. I mean if you dont blow it up, it'll be good till about 25k or so.... :smile: haha nah im just playing.

But really just wait a little longer pleaseeee. I dont wanna see anything mess up on it.

Around 75% throttle it starts to go richer, drops to the 13's. I haven't given WOT yet, just part throttle pulls. I hadn't given it that much throttle when we talked last.

Haven't seen it go richer than that, but that could be because I haven't opened it up.

Trust me, I don't either.

It's funny, we can buy a brand new truck and hammer it from day one without fear of it breaking but when we buy a replacement engine we have to baby it for a while to break it in. What's up with that? :confused:

I did manage to break my stocker in for 500 miles.

I guess the difference is I am second guessing myself since I assembled it. Logic should be that if it can live at 4,000 RPM, it should live at 6,000 RPM, RIGHT???

I did a burnout 2 miles from the dealership w/6 miles on mine and drive it like I stole it!120k miles later no problems,good oil pressure and still beats hemis on a weekly basis.Wish I could say the same about the tranny! LOL

If you google "engine break in"...the first six links effectively say hammer it.

Its got to be true cause I read it on the internet. :doh::lol:

Really though, if you read the articles they make sense regarding the sealing the rings.
