Thread: 4L80e problem

  1. #1

    4L80e problem

    2001 2500HD, 4L80e trans

Recently I installed a Transgo HD2 shift kit in my trans. Sep plate drilled .086 for average shift firmness and I also used imidized plastic checkballs.

    And the trans worked great

Then I had it flushed, filter changed again, and switched to Dex6

And again, the trans worked great

Then I added independent grounds from my batteries spare (-) terminal to the frame, firewall, and block. As well as a line from the firewall to the alt, all using 2 gauge welding cable

Now the trans has a problem

When it sits for any measure of time and I hit the gas, if I hit the gas around 1/4 throttle it'll rev like its in neutral to about 1400 then shift solidly into 1st.

More than 1/2 throttle and it doesn't do it, less than 1/4 throttle and I can't feel it either. And it'll roll slowly forward if just left in D on a flat surface. And if its moving any faster than that the problem isn't present, or at least not detectable.

Still shifts solidly through all gears, even at WOT up steep grades.

Fluid is very red, smells fresh, and isn't gritty or discolored. And the temp gets right up to 140 and stays there.

What would this be? Solenoids, something coming loose in the trans?

Whats wore is I have to drive the truck 357 miles up to college either tomorrow or the next day.

Any ideas? Has anyone seen this problem before? Right now its just kind of a nuisance but I don't want it to become anything worse.

I would start off by removing the extra wires and see if the trans goes back to normal!!!!

don't see any mention of if you checked the fluid. Just remember to check the fluid level on flat ground, engine/trans up to temp and idling with transmission in neutral.

    No SES codes?

Solenoid issues would turn on the light and store codes as RedHeartbeat suggested. Some 80's have converter drain back issues but that wouldn't start overnight.

No lights, on one side of the dipstick the fluid is around the right level, maybe a tad low.

The other side of the dipstick is dry. Is it supposed to be like that?

No...you have stuff off the inside on the tube on one side and the other side telling the truth. Put stuff in until the lower of the two is on the mark. Sit around while it idles and the tube drains to make sure.

Ah, yes that might do it. The question is, did the idiots at the dealership put in the wrong amount or is it going somewhere?

I pulled the top plug on the tcase before the flush and it wasn't overfull. So the back seal should be okay.

It did feel like the converter wasn't getting enough fluid. Like it had to pump more in before it would start transferring power. I'll bet it was emptying out at low rpms then kicking in again when the pump got up to speed.

I'll top it off tomorrow and see where that gets me.

Thanks for the help, it's helping.

Id watch what you say. One of the smartest people on this site is a gm tech at a dealership.

So all of the dealership mechanics everywhere are perfect? You've met them all, and you've examined and rated their work and every last one on every endeavor, was at least acceptable?

Was I singling out anyone? That was not my intention. Simply that based on certain past mishaps I have some reason to be annoyed.

Overall I'm pleased with my dealership, they are at least courteous and honest, if not somewhat careless at times.

If I offended anyone, I apologize.
