    Well hello there .

Hello everyone my name is Jon i live in arizona i own a 01 1500 2wd with the 4.8. I have been working on cars and trucks for the last 15 years ive owned a 79 custom delux (pos) lol, A 91 k1500 shortbed stepside with the 5.7 and the one i spent the most time and money on was a 96 eagle talon esi with a n/a 2.0 that i put way to much money into and still got beat by moms in mini vans lol and then to have someone pull out infront of me and total it, Its a touchy subject lol. but not to bore you with import stuff I decided to get another truck and now i have this bug crwaling up my ars to start messing with things so i have some questions? I just need the basics of whats what on these trucks .

    (1) are the 4.8 and 5.3 both LS1 setup's with just a differant bore ? So external parts would be interchangeable between the two. Or is it like the tiny differances between the 350 and the 327.

    (2) What about parts i have been looking at jegs and summit will the parts they have listed for the LS1 work or is it one of those its the same but differant things. I look for it under the model and not much comes up yet i look up the 4.8 and i get abunch of stuff . grr

    (3) also ive noticed a rather rough idle is that common with these motors ? I've changed the plugs and wires fule filter with no results. Ive been told that the injectors have a tendancy to get carbon build up on the ones tward the front of the engine is that true ?

Well thats enough for now and i apoligize if thses should have been posted in a differant place . Thanks in advance

    welcome

4.8 and 5.3 are the same block with the same size bore only different stroke length. 6.0 is the same stroke as the 5.3 only larger bore. 5.7L LS1 in the 97+ Vette and 98+ Fbody and GTO is the same stroke larger bore than the 5.3L engine. The 5.3 cast iron block can be bored out to the same size as the 5.7L. There is also a 5.3L aluminum engine out there but they cannot be bored more than +.010" oversize, all aluminum blocks have this restriction. The newer L92/LS3 6.2L engines are based on the same platform as all the previous engines but have a crankshaft position wheel with 58 tooth reluctor wheel vs. the earlier 24 tooth wheel. The LS2 engine is the same as all the others mentioned and it is aluminum and early models had the 24t wheel and the late models have 58 teeth. Reluctor wheels can be changed to match your setup as required but have to be located accurately to work right.

All accessories will interchange from one engine to another in the Gen3/Gen4 platform. Gen4 are the latest engines with displacement on demand and cam timing phasers. Later engines have one bolt holding the camshaft sprocket while the earlier models have three bolts holding it on. Later engines have the knock sensors on the driver side of the block by the oil pan, earlier models had the sensors in the valley area under the intake. Early model cam sensors where in the rear of the valley area back by the firewall, newer engines have the sensor in the front cam cover and requires a special timing device on the cam sprocket....

    I could go on forever.

BTW, the most common issue on these engines is oil buildup in the intake manifold. High RPM driving will vaporize the oil and then its sucked into the intake and can cause carbon fouling of the plugs or buildup in the intake runners and on the injectors. A popular tuneup involves the intake of Seafoam additive through the intake manifold to rid the carbon. I wash mine with nitrous and fuel through a plate nitrous kit.

Also check the intake gaskets for vacuum leaks.
