hey guys, I want to get my conversion back going and I am stumped on the best engine. I was thinking about going to an LSx style engine and wonder if one is better than another? right now I am looking at a LS1 w/o pistons for $600...how does that sound??
thanks I know as I get more together I will have more questions

That's not a bad price if it comes with all the accessories, harness and PCM. If it's just a block, pass. The 6.0L will give you a little more bottom end if you're leaving the engine completely stock.*who can do that?*

A set of pistons and rings is going to cost you about $550 if you go new. Sometimes you'll find a great deal on rod/piston assemblies on Ebay. The gaskets to rebuild the LS1 will cost you about $100 for the head set and then you'll need individual gaskets to complete it, about $250 total on gaskets.

I'd say get a complete running engine and pass on a project engine, too much of a PITA to gather parts to complete the assembly.

I want a pic of that '50!! I had a '51 as my first truck. Learned to drive on it. All original with a 216 Thriftmaster straight 6, 6 volt, 4 speed, floor start and vacuum windsheild wiper drive!!

That sounds like a kick-ass swap. Go with Red, and get the 6.0

i think i agree with red and sc. you dont want to have too much to hassle with. I mean your already putting a genIII in a '50.

My pops has a 51 in the back yard with three on the tree and the floor start. I think it was a 6 window, or maybe a 7 window with the front windshield split. Funny thing is, he got it for free and it runs.

6.0 is the way to go! sounds like a nice project. Plus you get the added displacement of having 6.0 liters instead of 5.7. either way your in good shape.

I see a side by side engine swap in the works...... That would mean SC would put the VHO on hold...

Thanks for the input.
I wanted a 6.0L but the place by me (scrham) is not cheap, but I figure I am in the motor city why cant I find a deal on an engine.

I want to get a 6.0l and put it in for mock up...then replace it with the LQ9 from my SS, and then rebuild the mock up 6L into bigger better for the SS. But my budget is low (read:three kids, one on the way)

so as of now I am looking at a new 5.3 block, just to get my motor mounts finished, and its only $75. Suggestions?? Connections???

I will post some pics, I am trying to get it moved to the heated garage so work can continue during the winter.

thanks again for the input.

"Schram" that is where my LS1 came from, off of ebay. I don't go to casino's so I have to gamble somewhere. Sounds like a nice project.
