Unhappy

I am stuck and kind of don't know where to turn right now, I offered my "help" in doing an engine swap for a guy. He has a 1992 1500 4x4 with the 350 TPI and a 700R4 in it, maybe had is the operable word here. I did the engine swap. I have the vortec bolted up to the 700R4 (he had just had the tranny rebuilt for the low low price of 1700 dollars and couldn't afford to get the 4L60E) The engine he got was from a "friend" of his who has a small scrap yard, he was told he was given everything to do the swap. Including a wiring diagram (which is from a '85 Blazer - '96 Vortec swap using the 4L60E) I honestly can't make heads r tails from it. I've got greasy prints all over my Haynes manuals and still don't know where to turn lol.

I have the entire harness off the Vortec, well right to the cab anyway, is there somewhere I can get a diagram of what needs to be spliced and what can go? I have schematics from both trucks, I'm just puzzled as to what has to be kept/spliced/tossed or burned lol.

This is kind of scaring me off of a LS1/2 swap in my '99 Tahoe lol.

Sorry, we're familiar with LS1 Gen3 engine conversions. OBS Vortecs are not our forte' here appearantly. About the best you can do is keep thrashing or buy a harness from Painless if they sell one for the OBS Vortecs. Good luck!

I think Painless sells 'em for OBS Vortecs. You could also try LT1Wiring. As for the price of that $1700 rebuild... FLT's Level 3 trans cost $1500 & their Level 4 trans cost $1800... and those ARE 4L60Es. The trick would be controlling the shift points & sensors, but having what he's got... I'd rebuild the 700R4 too, and keep it vac-mod'd. Hell, FLT would have taken that, and "built" it stronger for about the same, if not a tad cheaper. And the warranty would be awesome.

He got burned on the tranny, that's the biggest thing. The guy put in a Transgo shift kit and servo's and called it bullet proof lol.

Wouldn't the harness be similar to the LT1 harness??

Don't be afraid of the LS1 conversion. If you buy a custom wiring harness and can read a test light, you should be able to complete the conversion. We're alway around to help if you have questions.

I'm one of those guys that like to do things themselves so buying a harness is kind of a last resort, that and I am a kinda poor guy lol. I've never been so stumped with wiring in my life, usually wiring is the one thing I rock at. I think I'm going to put the LS1 into an the 88 pickup though. After the trouble I've run into on this I think I'd like to keep it as simple as possible lol. I guess if I had a proper diagram it would be a lot easier.

PM'd ya back.

Maybe Red can add to this, but...

1 - VSS signal to ground
2 - VSS signal feed (to PCM/ECM/VCM)
3 - VSS signal output to instrument cluster <--- this is where you want your gauge spliced.

These are pins located on the NBS PCMs. I do not have much knowledge on the pre-99s wiring (aside from my '86), but I'd imagine that if it's computer controlled, you'd have something similar. Autometer's good about making products that work with GMs wide year range of compatible VSS technology. <--- that crap actually sounds legitimate. LOL

So the green wire goes where? lol
So I met the guy I was going to get the "LS1" from today, went to his garage and it turns out the dude doesn't know the difference between an LS1 and an LT1. Not only that, the harness he said he had was a bundle of wires with no ends (he says it was easier to cut them when he pulled the motor) I was still snickering up until the point where we couldn't get the thing to turn over so he offered to go get a snipe. So if anyone in Canada has an LS1 sitting around drop me a message lol. Otherwise that swap will be waiting a while lol.

As for this one, I had some "super" mechanic come over at a friends urging, with the promise that this guy was the best around. Well according to him, the swap can not be done, then argued with me that a head off of a targetmaster 350 from the 80's was the exact same as the vortec heads and the vortec name was only for the intake. All in all I am having a grand day lol.

Anyone have any tylenol? lol
