I have an 00 gmc with the 4.8. My light never comes on that tells me to change the oil. It has not worked in the time that I have owned the truck. Anybody have a clue as to why it never works? I change the oil and filter at 3k.

Do you reset the light when you change your own oil? Mine comes on around 7000miles. If you reset the light every 3 it won't ever come on.

If you are not resetting the light it would appear there is something wrong.

I have never reset it. I have also noticed that you cannot turn off the auto headlights by pressing the dome light button three times. Maybe it is cursed

to reset the oil life turn the key on and push and realese the gas pedal 3 times in 5 seconds then turn key off, on my truck you turn the headlight select counter clockwise to turn off the auto system.

I have tried to reset it but nothing ever happens. I think that the headlight switch in the 03+ is different than the 02 and down.

I wonder if the oil life indicator doesn't come on because the pcm or bcm senses that the oil level went below the oil sensor switched level while the engine was off and automatically reset the oil life value.

In the owners manual it tells you about the oil light from what i read it does not specifically deal with mileage but the actual oil. Mine does not come on with a set mileage. I did not reset mine a couple of times for that reason and it came on once at 4500 miles and another closer to 7000. My lights do not turn off either. I kind of perfer auto head lights, just me. I think it was changed on the newer models 03+, mine is an 02.

i was told that the oil life is based on engine revolutions, the pcm has a value for how many revolutions the engine would make in about 7000-or so miles and also keeps track when the oil reached operating temps and then takes those values and calculates when the oil should be changed, but does not physically sample the oil, basically another idiot light for lazy people who dont like to do maintanence.but a cool feature non the less

It's based on how long (time) the engine has been at what speed (rpm) at what throttle position (load). If you left it in 2nd, and only drove uphill at wide open throttle, it would tell you to change the oil in short order. If you only ever drove downhill with your foot off of the gas, it would be a lot of miles between changes.
But this still doesn't answer cochran63.
Hey, cochran63, have you tryed pushing the dome light button 4 times?

yeah i was gonna say push it 4 times too. mine is 4 times and it goes off. you can also put the parking break on before you turn it on. and then when you let it off it turns the lights on. but i mean that doesnt give you the "manual" control of turning the lights on and off
