Well, now I am depressed. I took the truck to the dyno today and got the bad news, it's a POS. It layed down only 244 HP and 251 TQ while pinging and rattling. The valvetrain has alway ticked in both my trucks for some reason, sounds a bit like solid lifters and good old piston slap that the LSx engines are notorious for. Had a good amount of black smoke rolling out the tailpipes under full throttle, too. The wideband showed 14:1 flat on the fuel mixture throughout the pull, pretty lean. The dyno operator thinks maybe way too much timing is causing the black smoke out the tailpipes, detonation. I guess it's time to take a road trip to SA for a real time dyno tune.

Bummer! Get it running right so it'll give me some hope with mine! If I only get under 300 HP I'm gonna go buy a Honda LOL

Believe me, I am sick over it. This thing is supposed to be 400 hp at the crank, minimum. Maybe it's too much cam and not enough flow through the head. It's an FI cam so that may be killing my performance since I don't have any FI going on right now. I know, I need to get Allen to trade me his GTO turbo kit for a couple packs of chewing gum so I can take advantage of the cam.

Yikes, that's not good

I checked your file, it should have 26deg of timing at wot, and 12.5 a/f ratio, oh well.
If anything, I'd expect it to run a tad rich.
Does it ping on the street and smoke like you described?
Come on down whenever you'd like! I'll be ready. We can get a good street tune going with the wideband.

see ya soon.

cheer up red! its probably something simple! i guess you could always throw a carb and intake on it, but what fun would that be?

Yeah, there was a stock 4.8L 2006 scsb there that laid down 251hp. I'm definitely heading to S.A. before too long! One thing I can say is this thing gets great highway MPG at 22-23.

Yeah, it pings on the street sometimes, too. I have noticed the black smoke on acceleration. I figured it was too rich on the fuel mixture. It's been getting 14-15 mpg in city driving while I get 22-23 on open highway so I only figured it was unburned fuel. I'll go out and drive it here in a little bit with the Autotap hooked up to see how much timing advance it's pulling. I thought I had seen 36 degrees of timing by Autotap. I thought that was extreme. I'll get back on that one shortly.

Wow! Unless there is something wrong with my Autotap I can see why I get so much clatter. The timing is about 24 degrees at idle and maxes out around 40 under acceleration.
