    Hard starting

My '07 5.3L Suburban recently developed a hard start problem. If I just go and try to start it, it turns over but won't "catch". If I let it sit with the key on (fuel pump building pressure) then it will start the next turn of the key, although it isn't immediate either. If I go and turn the key on and let it sit until all if the dash lights and dinging are done, it will usually start after several seconds of cranking.

My first thought was dirty fuel filter, but I found that they don't have one. FPR is my next thought since it runs good once it starts. No issues like stalling or dying like if the pump were weak or bad. Please someone tell me that it has an FPR and that they didn't get rid if that either! Anything else it might be?

Try running a fuel pressure gauge on it to see if it is a fuel problem.

It doesn't have a FPR per say. It is built into the fuel pump assembly. You will need a whole new one. Yes, this is your issue. I just went through it in my truck for the last month until I figured it out. Your only real option is to replace it. You could be the Guinea pig and try to convert to Corvette regulator and return line, but good luck getting the check ball that is sticking out of the assembly.

Install a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail and measure the fuel system bleed down rate. Those regs go bad more often than not. If fuel pressure is bleeding down you can install aftermarket regulator or you will need to replace the entire fuel pump module.

yeah, fuel pressure regulator and filter are both in the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank on the newer returnless, single fuel line, systems.

Took it to the local dealer after talking with a GM mechanic buddy of mine. He said that in about '07, they started having issues with the single returnless line systems. Checkball/valve in the system was allowing the fuel pressure in the line to bleed off causing an extended crank time problem. Told dealer what the problem was and they fixed it under the extended powertrain warranty so no out of pocket for me!
