Alpine head unit, kicker amp and speakers, JL Audio 8" subs has worked for me more than ten years no problems.

The w7 is overkill and overpriced for his application

I'm going to go ahead and side with Justin on most of this.
Your head unit is what is going to matter the most on what the end product sounds like.
Your connectors needed will depend on your amp and power kit you buy, most of the good quality ones just accept the wire without the need for crappy crimp-on terminals.good power kits (ie Rockford Fosgate, JL, Kicker, etc.) already have your big ring terminals installed on the wire.
8" subs are not useless, I've owned Rockford 8s that people confused for 10s.
Go for Kenwood or Pioneer on the head unit in my most honest of opinions.
I think Kicker sucks, Yeah it's loud, yeah it's not too bad on price, the sound quality just isn't there for me.
