    Oil Pressure Sender?

Was driving, looked down and saw the oil pressure was reading almost 80psi, while normally hot shows right around 40psi. First thing I thought of, uh-oh, plugged oil passage causing issues (always think of the worst thing first!). Turned the radio off, no abnormal noise ... well, that's good. Pulled into the parking lot and shut off the engine. Turned the key on and the gauge is now showing about 40psi without the engine running. Started up the engine again and it showed the ~80psi again. I'm thinking at this point it is the oil pressure sending unit, but was wanting a second opinion. I don't think it would be the dash gauge as they reset themselves every time you turn the ignition on, right? I plugged in my engine code reader which also reads live engine data ... unfortunately it does not show oil pressure. I hate R&R mechanics, so looking for that elusive second opinion. Also, is there a resistance test for the pressure sender I can perform?

Try unplugging it and turn the key on. What does it read?

Well, either dead on the gauge or pegged ... I will check it tomorrow. Worth a look-see.

Thought I would follow-up. Pulled the wire to the sender and the gauge dropped to zero. Replaced the sender and all is well with the world. Retorqued to 28ft lbs with my calibrated ratchet. No leaks, back on the road.

I know this isn't a "hot rod" or "truck mod" style question, but thought the general knowledge base could handle the information.
