Well My 04 (pre stroker) had 418BHP with a set of my ported heads 220cc and a .525/.525 Z06 cam? and it was an 04 dish piston build with stock 5.3L combustion chambers. This build has the LS2 5.3L chambers and flat top's.
Think about it.... This 5.3L came out of an 07/08 Tahoe the stock numbers are ( For SUV applications, it is rated at 320 hp (239 kW) and 340 ft•lbf (461 N•m) of torque)... If you don't think this engine will pick up 80hp with a set of 220cc ported heads flowing 288@.600L, a much larger cam (for a 5.3L), ported intake and ported TB... ? Like I said 400+. It will all come down to the tune, I would recommend bigger injectors as well but my 04 ran fine with the injectors at 27#.... Heck I can throw a set of long tubes on that stock 5.3L and get 340hp..lol (now all ya need is 40hp to hit 400) I understand your thoughts but I have found these little 5.3L will get it!
The HP on my 04 was calculated based on Trap speed and weight (the best way to get real hp #'s) 1/4 time: 13.42 / Trap speed: 107.5 / Weight 4680 with me in it and the tonu (spelling?) cover. =418.24BHP

Yes and no, If you go to the Larger Inj's, LS6 intake and a larger 80mm TB it will scream! The LS6 Cam is .550/.550 and like 215/220 or close to it. The larger lift and duration would work best with bigger injectors, Tb and LS6 intake and a dyno tune. It might give this 5.3L a little more but to get the true potential you would want to upgrade to the above mentioned stuff. I used the LS2 cam mainly to keep it cost effective and easily tuned with a mail order tune , and I had it on hand. Now if you threw that .550/550 on a stock head (not ported) it would do really good with the 27#ers due to less air flow and it needing less fuel to optimize combustion, but porting the heads and using that cam you need lots more fuel to atomize properly and not run lean. So like I said yes and no.
Heck you should have seen that lil 4.8L we were screwing around with a couple months ago
I kept porting the heads out more and more we used the MS4 cam it finally blew using 42#ers ported TB and intake
with the heads flowing 308@.600L making 490hp on the stock bottom end, It blew a hole in the piston. I think if we went to 60+ pounders it would have kept going...lol
Just a junk yard 4.8L I had lying around I don't even know how many miles were on it, It was a grease trap..lol
