How do I find out my gear ration? I looked on the axle and it isn't there and I also lifted the truck and spun the tires to try and count how many times the shaft turns but it doesn't turn. Also are both wheels supposed to turn at the same time in opposite direction?.....Might be a dumb question.

The authoritative way is to remove the rear cover and count how many teeth are on the ring gear, then how many teeth are on the pinion gear; divide the larger number by the smaller number.

dont do that, if they are factory then just look at your rpo codes on one of the tags on your truck, prolly in the glove box, old trucks sometimes had them on the inner fender. If these tags are gone then take the cover off and go to counting, there are number on the ring gear, you can divide them to get your ratio! The rpo codes will have one or two sets of numbers in it starting with "g"....such as this gt4 or gt5, these are 373 and 410....common gears in the older truck are 3.08 which is gu4 and 273 which is gu2.

    hope this helped

You never know what gears are in a vehicle until you crack the rearend open. Sometimes even the wrong rearend can be assembled in a new truck. If you bought it second hand the gears could have been changed out.

So I opened the rear end up and was poking around in there. I couldn't turn the yoke for some reason so I grabed a flash light and saw that there were two numbers (11.41) which I assumed to be the teeth count for both gears. I divided the two of them together and came up with 3.73. So that is what I assume my gear ration is. Thanks for all the help guys.
