You're telling me! When they cannot finish the OEM 5/100 warranty on totally stock and generally OK maintained vehicle I would never consider them with any sort of performance cam. I'm sure George has a point, someone can make the system work but it's still not reliable and puts too much of a hamper on the performance side as well. I've replaced the DOD lifters in probably five LS truck engines under warranty since July....and I'm only one person.

Even if it could be reliable, there's not a demand for that type of class or using something that leaves a lot on the table.
It's like GM's badass C5R vette, they are throttle body limited in the class they run but the car still makes good power. However, install a throttle body that is sized correctly and ...
So the question is, why limit yourself when you don't have to

I know this thread is a few days old....

I was under the assumption that all this stuff could be simply turned off through a good tune. Is that not the case? I understand the lifters are junk, but that's an easy fix.

Did can be turned off but you would still have the junk lifters. When you swap cams to a non vvt cam you have to get rid of the vvt phaser and sprocket.

The VVT sparked my interest I found a pretty good read on ls1tech about VVT cams and VVT tuning. Even Patrick G offers his insight.
Am I allowed to post links?

Yea, but that isn't really the point of this thread. I'm not arguing it one way or the other. I'm only providing a general cost and item list.

I would also replace the Gen IV timing chain tensioner with the old style LS2 wedge tensioner. Its cheap insurance and to my knowledge is not included in either the VVT or DOD delete kits.

It is not included. I didn't do it. I realize I'm taking the risk, but if a lot of 800 HP cars are running the stock one, I'll chance it.
