It actually helps lower combustion temperatures and lowers fuel consumption while cruising. During idle and WOT it's not in use.

so what your saying is everyone that has deleted EGR needs to put it back on because it will perform better?

The way it was explained to me, is that the exhaust it recirculates is still a lot colder then the combustion chamber so it helps CRUISING. Like stated before idle/WOT are not affected so 'performance' no...economy yes

But your engine is HIGHLY inefficient. So that exhaust still has gas in it, so technically you're forcing more gas into the engine then just the injectors.

I know it's a dirty system, and removing it keeps the engine cleaner, but it should help gas mileage (whether its 3mpg or .1mpg I do not know)...even if it does hurt performance slightly.

That's not the purpose of EGR. In fact it is the opposite. It introduces the INERT exhaust in order to lower combustion temps. This reduces NOx emissions.
