Rod bearings are usually not too bad to diagnose, start the engine, rev to 2000-2500 and hold steady then goose the throttle, if you get a few loud bangs in there while revving (louder and deeper than its normally like) then you can prettymuch bet its a rod bearing. If you cannot tell from that, do the same thing only in gear, hold to 2000rpm against the converter and goose the throttle, with the engine loaded the rods will clang fuggin loud if its failed.
Why not pull the pan on the 4.8 and check it?
