Rebuilding Engine - How do I set initial timing?

    Hello,

This post in hopes of learning a bit more about modern ls computerized engines. I have recently purchased a 2002 GMC Sierra with a modified 5.3. Unfortunately I have found that the recently rebuilt engine has a major problem with crank snout that requires a full bottom end rebuild. Please forgive my lack of knowledge on computerized engines...I have knowledge of old school engines, but very little with new stuff!

On non-computerized engines, after a rebuild, you must find TDC and set initial timing to get it running right. How on earth do you time these engines with no distributor, timing marks etc? Does the computer automatically set it up at a predetermined setting? Do I need some kind of tuner to do this?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thank you!

A Ls engine has a crank and cam sensor that tells the computer where the timing is to fire the coil packs and injectors your timing set has marks just like a old style engine find tdc is done with a piston stop and degree wheel just like a sbc .your timing set has marks just like a old engine. line them up pointing at each other and your home.(unless you need to advance or retard the cam .you don't use a timing lite on these motors like old style motors computer does all the igniton timing.hope this helps

That does help! Sounds too simple...computers sure seem to simplify things. Thanks for the information

And at the same time can complicate things... Lol. But it is definitely a major upgrade!
