running big tires/wanting a cam

Just bought a 2004 reg. cab stepside. 5.3 stock 4l60 and 3.73 and im goin to put some long tube headers on it. and get a tune but would like to add a cam. not sure what cam and i have read alot about some cams kill low end power. I am running 35inch tires can someone please give me some advice on what cam i need? I do alot of highway driving and had 4.56 just turned to many rpm's at 80mph so not really wanting to regear. thanks in advance

i actually gained like 2mpg on my 36's from 3.73 to 4.56 because motor wasn't stressing as much. Think 4.10 is happy medium.


I just sold a cam, but those specs are what comp recommended for a lifted, "i want low end power" setup. I told them my goal was to lift the front tires

something close to comp cam 54-412-11 212/218 522/529 114 and probably a 1800-2200 stall would be perfect.

thanks. shifty. i have a 2200 stall layin around my shop came out of a buddies truck. with the 36's what is your rpm's at 80?

With 36's and my 4.56 about 2600-2800 I believe. I normally keep cruise on 70-75 and get about 15-16mpg. If I keep cruise at 50, I get about 18...but that's too slow lol.

I have the TR224 on my 4.8 with 4.56 gears on 33's and I dont mind the rpm. Its more about what you like. More gear is more leverage, so easier on the motor/faster off the line. Use a gear/tire size/ rpm calculator to find what rpm you would like to be at at a certain speed.
