    caddy on fire!

what would cause both my eletric fans to catch fire at the same time? the ac was on when it happend so only one fan should have been running, cycleing on high with the comprosser. (with ac on, temps never get high enough for both fans to be on high) the fans were procomp from a vendor on ebay let me just get that out there now because that is my first guess. the harness is a nelson witch i think is a nice piece and the combo has worked perfect for the last 3-5 months, however my truck was still on fire. the belt driven fan is back on, probly not going back to the elec fans for a while till i can figure out what the problem is. this is just my luck. any ideas?

i have a set of those fan and the soldering on the terminals is terrible, after about 2 weeks the soldering has broken loose from the piece it was supposed to stick to and the wire just wiggled around breaking connection all the time. so for the most part one motor of the other wasn't working all the time.

I ended up buying two 13'' fans off of honda civics and mounting them in their place. And lemme tell ya, those honda fans pull some serious air. around 2500cfm each. they cost me 5 bucks a piece and a couple of m/f weatherpak connectors.

some of the harness's supply a constant power while the ground is switched on and off through the pcm . if there is anywhere in the harness that could have rubbed through that power wire it could have caused it . i know the back of the motors on the oem fans will test 12v hot. could have something to do with it . i have found some crappy harness's in the past and had to fix a couple.

i will try to get ahold of seller next, im not as mad about the fans burning up as i am about the idea of my whole truck burning up. never gave thought to them catching on fire just figured if the price was going to be any reflecion on the quality of the fans they would just quit working. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DUAL-...item43a542f0ed what do you guys think of these? same crappy china motors in a factory shroud?

Did the electric motors actually burn or was it the wiring that burned? Or both?

A loose connection at the fans will cause a high amount of resistance which basically turns into a glowing heating element whch would melt any non silver solder and could catch wiring or motor or any plastic nearby on fire. Did the fuse pop on them?
"Junk fans. Got too much current"...that goes against ohms law. A dc motor will pull what current that the rotor was wound for unless you throw in a locked rotor condition which isnt as dramatic on a dc motor as it is on an AC motor.

Voltage (alternator output) divided by resistance (ohm reading of motor winding) = current draw

The leads from the fans were on fire- the fan motors were seized up.
