Chapter 11 bankruptcy is the only way out, it allows them to cancel any contracts and completely restructure the company. Simply put - the unions outta there. Why wouldn't they get rid of there interest in Saab?

I say they need to get rid of hummer and saab. Maybe even Saturn, even tho I hear they make a bunch of money for them but I'm not a big fan.

the union isnt the problem. first of all cuz gm has to agree on the terms of what they are going to pay the union. one of the biggest mistakes gm made was getting rid of the union workers who made steering wheels and door panels. they outsourced that work cuz the company they out sourced to came in and underbid the union, gm took the bait fired something like 3500 people. then the company they outsourced to tripled they're price. and unions arent going anywhere while that obama guy is in office. democrates are all about unions. i agree that the union workers were paid too much but gm agreed to pay em that much and would you say anything if you were making a crap load of money for doing somethingyou can do with your eyes closed. NOPE.

so dont go blaming this on the union worker. it all boils down to bad desicions made by the heads of gm. and the union workers arent going anywhere even if they restructure which im sure theyre gonna do. the union workers have the power if they get rid of the union that means they have to fill those seats immediatly with skilled workers. and if they hire some jackass off the street who's gonna train them, no one cuz gm fired the union guy that trains the unskilled workers.

Effin A! That pisses me off, cause I was 100% getting a 1/2 ton Baby Duramax for my next truck...
My opinion is that with the government being nice enough to go out an bail these guys out (which was partly their fault), they need to get lean and mean with the company operations and trim some fat. Saab is worthless. GM was only using them at having another iron in the fire. GM needs to get rid of Saab period.
As much as I'd hate to say this, GM needs to get rid of Hummer too--only because the brand is hurting GM's goal of meeting the EPA's mpg standard standards. Like Saturn, most of Hummer's products are rebadged and slightly retooled already produced GM drivelines, but Hummer is not necessary.
I do think GM should keep Saturn because of the potential help to meet mpg standards. The government would be more apt to letting GM keep the Saturn brand because it would help GM meet their standards for vehicle fuel efficiency. With Saturn's vehicles being "reskinned" platorms GM already makes, Saturn isn't needing to take a lot of GM's money for them to operate.
I also think GM needs to trim the fat in the upper management's salaries, company embellished services, and the Union's BS. I am with Devin--Chapter 11 needs to happen so they restructure contracts--which means the Unions are gone.
In order for GM to have their trucks get better mpgs--they NEED to continue production of the 1/2 ton diesel--along with a beefed up 2-mode Hybrid, which is the same system that is used in the Escalade. The combo of the two would yield 20+ mpgs city and 20+ mpgs hwy.
