The older vehicles have a control module that is good for only one deployment. Once any or all inflators have deployed, the module stores a deployment code that cannot be cleared (latched code). Not only do the affected inflators need replaced in this scenario, but so does the module.
Some time around 2004-2006, GM allowed two deployment events before the SDM became locked.
There can be module programming (if the SDM is replaced) needed depending on exact model and options. Some need programmed, some don't. If all you need is the inflator, there is no programming needed.
Be aware that if the steering wheel inflator deployed, many times the contact coil is burnt too. On a 2006, this means the entire steering column harness would need replaced if the coil is burnt. This is because GM stopped offering the coil by itself in later years of the GMT800 platform.
Also, there is a chance you have one or two front end descriminating sensors cashed.
I would pull the air bag fuse, replace the deployed inflator, then reinstall the fuse. Check to see if the light is still on. If it is, you'll need scanned for codes.

Rule for offroading, always take out air bag fuse. That sux too man.
