Tire for winter.. and I mean snow

I know most of you are in texas.. but maybe someone knows something about winter types tire? Don't have to be snow tires.

I'm traveling in about two weeks to go up north. And as of now I'm on firestone destination le.. from what I understand not really good for much winter use. I even get stuck ON wet grass, ok well slightly soggy grass.

So what are some good tires to get? I know blizak are good.. but damn expensive.

Blizzak's.

What's expensive is having to fix your truck and maybe someone else vehicle or property because you skimped on snow tires.

I'm from upstate NY - listen to me on this one.

Another option is buying some basic snow tires and having them studded. Not sure how heavy of snow or ice you'll dealing with.

Also swing by Home Depot and buy about 12 bags of play sand and throw it over the rear wheels.

Oh, and bring a tow strap in case you get stuck. Sucks when someone stops to pull you out and no one has a strap.

im in upstate N.Y. and i use mickey thompsons,,nice ,agressive and a beautiful riding tire .when i take my 20s off in the winter and put them on ,im happy,they ride like the factory tires and get excellent traction ,even plowing and i do alot of that.Yes you should get sandbags and a strap.good luck !let me know if you need to know anything else,as far as info ,weather etc.

Cooper Discoverer M&S. I will never own another winter tire again. Had them on all my trucks (3). Last pretty good as an all year tire too. My old Dakota 2WD peg leg could handle more snow than a 4wd with your average all terrain type tire. Awesome on ice too. Take this seriously, I'm Canadian and right smack dab in the snow belt. And $144 a piece for 245 70 17 ain't bad either.

those are all good tires. i have firestone dest AT,they are nice. for a winter tire go blizzak's or firestone winter force

Thanks for all the info guys. Really helped. I do like the blizzak.. always said that would be the only winter tire I buy. And will be something next season I get.

Another question. I'm kind of tired of the 235 track tire on there now. What is the widest tire I can safely get on stock 16" wheels? Oh and did I mention its lowered.. so can't have too tall of a tire. Total height now is about 30"

I like the thought of 255's or 265's. Just don't know if thats possible.

And those cooper discoveries.. yeah I might do that for this season. Very affordable!

Edit: And I starting to think blizzak tires would give me what I'm wanting, a wide slightly lower profile tire.

Skinnier tires are better in the snow typically. They cut through better instead of keeping you on top. I wouldn't try to go for a wide tire.

arent you traveling up north by WI and MN? i had firestone Destinations and they sucked as well. If you are coming up here then get some blizzaks but realize they are made to drive in weather 40 degrees or colder, so if you drive down south where its still a little warmer im not sure what they will do, but i know the roomate had to wait til this weekend to pop em on since its now low 30's and snowing

other wise a lot of people run the BFgoodrich AT's usually you only have to worry about the snow if we get more than 6 inches at a time, otherwise the roads are pretty good, and if you really want, go get about 3 or 4 80lb sandbags from menards or homedepot, other wise i just use the 4x4 and try to stay out of it
