I believe my tranny is having issues (any input FLT?)...

I posted a while back about how immediately after I got the torque converter installed (immediately as in on the way home from the shop) something would vibrate ever so slightly under the truck. I got a lot of input about different possibilities (heat shields, etc.) and removed those, but the problem is still there.

Except it's getting a LOT worse. Here's what it does:

The vibration ALWAYS starts when I gently ease on the throttle. Never below like 30 mph or pulling out of the driveway or anything - just mainly if I'm out driving normally and give it just a little bit of pedal to maintain my speed - it will make a very loud vibrating/rattling sound. It never seems to do it in 1st gear - not sure about second. But definitely in 4th and pretty sure it does it in 3rd too. Since it's only in certain gears, could it be clutch packs in the tranny? Or maybe it's a flaw in the converter? I'm lost here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does it have any vibration while in neutral? IM thinking if it’s a balancing issue with the tq then you would probably feel it while in neutral. Driving vibration im wondering if the back of the trans could be shifted left or right on the crossmember just a couple of degrees that could cause vibration. Now far as internals of the tq I wouldn’t know. You didn&#39;t change flex plate did you?

I HAVE HEARD OF SMALL CONVERTERS DOING THAT. I COULD BE WRONG. I THINK THE SMALL STALL ARE MADE FOR MORE STRIP AND A LITTLE STREET. THIS IS JUST MY TWO CENTS THOUGH?

hmmm. I don&#39;t think it&#39;s supposed to be doing this though. Sounds like the thing is going to fall off the truck.

maybe a driver modification would help :laugh:

You&#39;re probably right - I probably get on it too much and something is finally saying "enough". In fact I was getting on it coming home from the airport this morning and it almost seemed to stick in third. Was revving at about 6,000 and it just held there for a bit - then finally shifted. That&#39;s a first. I hope I&#39;m not about to lose my transmission.

Who&#39;s Danny and what&#39;s his dad do?

Well I just talked to Jerry at Jerry&#39;s Transmissions, and by the description of the problem, he said it definitely sounds like the 3-4 clutch packs going. He&#39;s going to listen to it/drive it tomorrow morning to see for sure, but if that&#39;s what it is, I&#39;ll be looking at a &#036;2,000 repair. I&#39;m guessing he&#39;s my best bet to have this done? I&#39;ve heard Rock On is good, but they&#39;re way up in Denton as opposed to Garland (I&#39;m in Mesquite). And for some reason neither of the phone numbers on their site are working.

Good luck getting hold of Dave at Rock On&#33; I haven&#39;t been able to contact him for a month. Last time I talked to him he was covered up and thinking of doing shipping sales only. Too much work in rebuilds/installs for him and his son. You might try email.

never heard of em actually.... are you talking about Eagle Transmission on hwy 66??

Dave at Rock-on is a Vet and walks on a prosthetic leg. He&#39;s on his feet so much at times it wears a hole in the stump and he has to be off his feet until it heels. I&#39;ve been up there a couple times and talked to him. He does some nice work but like you said, he&#39;s hard to reach by phone most of the time because they&#39;re buried with work and they have/had two locations going that he was trying to manage. The Denton location is just Dave and his son. In Grand Prairie or Arlington he has another location where he has his transmission dyno and more guys that build close to stock units. He&#39;s spread pretty thin. Getting your transmission built close to home is a great idea because you can always get there a lot quicker if you have questions about how it&#39;s performing. Sounds like Jerry might be the way to go if you can afford the repair costs. Since you have 4wd that always adds to the cost of the R&R. Good luck and let us know how it comes out&#33;

I just got back from Rowlett Transmission and he drove the truck and said he&#39;s 99% sure it&#39;s the transfer case - not the clutch packs. He said the chattering/vibration is too far back to be the tranny. Still pricey but hopefully not as much as a tranny rebuild. I&#39;ll get a second opinion from Jerry&#39;s in the morning.

It sounds like Jerry has a LOT of experience with performance tranny&#39;s in general as well as these truck trannys. Is that a correct conclusion?

he drives one of our trucks... 2500 hd.... i think he knows ours pretty damn well :laugh:

he has a bone stock 6.0 2500 HD quad cab...... he can RIP 2nd gear goin down the road if he gets on it..... Danny told me that so dont tell Jerry shhh

Well, Jerry said it looks like my problem (chatter) is the torque converter. The chattering can be stopped simply by tapping the brake and canceling the lock-up clutch. So now I have to hope Fuddle will make things right...

Well that&#39;s my dilemma - do I JUST replace the converter? Or since the tranny is out, do I spend even more and have him rebuild what appears to be a tranny in ok working condition but one that may break down the road anyway...

all depends if you want to spend money now and build a BAMF trans, or if its not available save up and build a BAMF trans down the road.... all comes down to if you want to spend the money really...... as you keep modding, the more hp youll be putting through the trans

I guess what I worry about is if I JUST do the converter, and then the tranny breaks in 3 months, I&#39;m basically paying twice to have the tranny removed.

OR, I could just do the converter and the tranny could last another year. :duh: Or two. :duh: Or three. :duh:
