new front mount turbo results

Hey guys, the first official truck with the new front mount turbo is on the road and hauling ass!!
Just a quick recap, this is the new front mount turbo from Nelson Performance, built by Trick Terformance Products.
The test truck is an '06 Sierra, ext cab, 5.3l, 4x4, with 33inch tires.
This turbo setup is a daily driver's dream; as well as the racer! The truck is still very responsive and drives like a nicely tuned, stock truck, until you ease on the throttle. Then, boost is pretty much instant and the truck keeps pulling until the throttle is lifted.
Speaking of boost, I'm sure most of you want to know how easy boost comes in? How does full boost at 2000rpms sound when climbing a hill in fourth gear. That's great for towing. Also, it will build 5psi with a stock converter in a 2wd while brake stalling it. There is really no need for a higher stall converter with this kit since boost is so easily produced. Yes, that's 5psi for a launch! Once the truck is launched, the tires will go up in smoke through first and second. Put the truck in 4wd, for those who have it, and it'll snap your neck back and take off.

The turbo we chose was a 62-1 turbonectics with a .96 exhaust housing. This seems to work perfectly for a 5.3l, I'm sure it would be at home on a 4.8L. For those with a 6.0L, I think a T70 or T76 would be just right, we'll have one of those coming up in the next month or so.

The intercooler is working great. It's full 3" in and out. The intake temps were about 1-5 degs higher than outside temps during city and highway driving. Under full boost, through 1-2-3 it was about 20-25degs higher, never going over 82degs during about 50deg weather.

We'll post up some before and after track results and before and after dyno results next week. We're still proving the kit and fine tuning the truck before we put it on the dyno.

I'll try to post a vid of the gauges showing 5psi while brake torquing it and a nice burn out.

What is the out the door cost for this setup "This includes parts, labor, etc."?

This will help all of us know how much to save up.

full spool at 2000 in 4th def sounds nice, it would def get rid of those annoying gear drops in cruise contol, i want one

this sounds great, SC no, Turbo YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. I may have to make the trip to Allen, 571 miles (one way) not that bad, I will trailer it. Leave it with him (trailer and truck) when its ready drive back and pick it up.

That's Sick! Great work allen, Makes me wish i would have kept my Z-71 to play with this new kit! Is this truck SD tuned?

Not SD tuned yet, still waiting fot the tune to be available for a 2006. By the way, if anyone drivability or any questions for that matter, feel free to ask.

- What are the underhood temps at under normal driving circumstances? Are they extremely high or low?
- Is the piping coated?

WHEN I WAS AT ALLEN&#39;S I LOOKED AT THE PIPING AND IT WAS COATED. HE WANTED TO DO A SWAP ON MINE, BUT I WOULDN&#39;T LET HIM, BUT YEA COATED. I DON&#39;T KNOW ABOUT THE HEAT, I WOULD ASSUME UNDER NORMAL DRIVING IT WOULD GET AS HOT AS THE MANIFOLDS, B/C THE TURBINE IS JUST SPINNING FREELY?

Adding any supercharger to the engine, that is under the hood, is going to increase temps.
I don&#39;t know the exact temps, but I can tell you all the plastic and tubing that is near the charger hasn&#39;t melted.
No, they aren&#39;t extremely high, but they did increase over stock.
The power it adds to the engine won&#39;t leave you worrying about how much heat increased.
Plus, the intercooler keeps temps just above outside temps.
The piping isn&#39;t coated with the base kit, but add about &#036;250 for coating the hot parts.

Well I was reading that wrapping the pipes would increase "spoolage" of the turbo, and with the pipes wrapped and not coated, it would lead to rusting and bad stuff like that. And coating them prevents them from rusting.

If using the factory exhaust manifolds for the front mount turbo, would wrapping the pipes be beneficial even though the turbo can already spool up 5 pounds on a stock converter?

What about STS? Do they coat the pipes?

Trust me, there is no need for faster spool up on this front mount, it&#39;s almost instant&#33;
Stainless steel will not rust, so wrap them if you&#39;d like, there won&#39;t be any issues.

No, they use the stock exhaust, uncoated

Reason I ask is I was just browsing some topics on pt.net and re-read the old "STS vs. whipple vs radix vs...." and it raised alot of questions.

Do you know of any disadvantages, or recent problems the front mount has run into? Not so much as installation, but more like operating issues.

bringing this back up for a couple more questions...

I was being bored and browsing the nelson performance web page and saw that the front mount comes with an air to air intercooler. What is the difference between air to air and air to water, and which one is better?

Air to air = less maintenance and slower exchange of heat
Air to water = need water pump and reservoir, faster exchange of heat

Top dogs in turbo drag cars dump ice water into their air to water units before each pass.

For a street vehicle I think it is retarded to run an a2w setup, too much shit to go wrong and your IATs are NOT going to be much if any better on the street then an a2a setup. a2w is best suited for the track when you can throw ice in teh reservior and bring the temps way down otherwise on the street you are just cruising with ambient water running through it. Its not worth all the extra complicity over an a2a which has NOTHING to go wrong with and besides, Allen has posted results on his Av where the IATs were within 10*s of ambient thats good enough for me with an a2a.

I&#39;m using an a2a and the max IATs readed so far R 135F pushig the hell out of it and with a heavily modified engine with the ambient temp hitting 100F.
Otherwise, cruising and spanking little rats from time to time does not pass 110.
Note that I have my intercooler totally cloaked, cause I&#39;ve been lazy to cut the hole in the lower bumper.
