i was reading about him on another site, and soem say he's as good as nelson at half the cost. has anyone used or heard anything about him, and if so is it good or bad? i know where im going for a tune, but just thought id ask for ur opinions and feedback.
never heard of him, but I have never felt a need to stray from Allen. Too good of service, and a good guy.
Ive heard of him, and Ive heard nothing but great things. But, I dont think he is as proven as Allen. I know his tunes are $250 w/ lifetime upgrades. I also know of an SS he tuned and it took .4 off his 1/8 mile time. But like i said, how much experience does he have? his site is gowheatley.com
like i told you before, he is a great tuner. but i also dropped a whole second with Allen's tune alone

I heard hyundai's were very reliable and cheap. But, you won't see me buyin' one. Stick with what you KNOW works.
sorry to stir up things, just thought id ask. i know im not gonna skim on a one time payment with lifetime upgrades for free, especially seeing the feedback allen has gotten from people i know, and people on the site as well. :thumb:
its tempting to me because he's around the corner, and alot easier to get ahold of than allen. i know of a couple damn nice trucks being tuned by charlie. the fastest N/A 4.8 is one of them
Charlie is one of my good friends, I can honestly say he does some great work, we send stuff to each other ever so often and he has some good stuff. It's whatever you feel comfortable with, he's a great guy to deal with.
To each his own.... I know the service and attention to detail is what I am getting. Plus he seems to show up at the same track some of us got to :smile:

But even Allen helped me figured out my mechanical problems, not only tunes.
He just help me by the phone like for 2 hours just hearing me winning and crying.....that's not service dudes.....that's FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!! !!!!

where is he located at?
He is located just outside of Houston, Katy I believe.
thats alot closer to me than allen...wonder if its worth it...
Allen has done a great job on my truck. If I still lived in Houston I probably would get Charlie to tune my truck since he is close, however Allen is closer to me, and is at SAR all the time where I would need him anyway. Allen is a very nice and knowledgeable and I wouldnt hesitate to do business with either. Allstar you are closer to Allen so in this case I would say go to Allen. Im not sure Charlie has a whole lot of experience with "wild" setups aka high psi turbo stuff or large shots of nitrous but he seems to do well from what I have read with cammed trucks.
good to know, talk about opening a bag of worms haha, what a simple post can turn into. although it's hard to get ahold of allen, ive heard great stories from people who have used him, and although it took him a while to respond(because i called him when they were moving) he went out of the way to make sure he called me and did all he could to help me. thats more than i can say for a lot of other people ive talked to. it's also hard to say someone is as good as him, because i mean just look at the gains he gets! as soon as i geyt my tranny ill have a tune from allen. i thought id ask since some others were saying he was as good at half the price. i didnt believe it, and still dont. any time they question who's the best, this post proves my point for me thanks guys!
Here is my unbiased opinion:
Allen has been around a long time and does know what he's doing -- hands down.
I have seen his work in person and it does not lack anything.
I have a tune from Charlie Wheatley and it does not fall short of awesome as well.
Charlie has plenty of experience tuning, not as much as Allen, but he is not too far behind.
Charlie is always available via phone or in person and have never heard him say he was too busy for something. He's a super nice guy as well, both outside and inside his business.
Its hard to get an unbiased opinion on a board that belongs to the person you are asking about, you should obviously know what kind of answers you'd get.

every forum has its favorites....beleave it or not, some chevy forums still recomend westers :nutz: this one is certainly pro nelson performance...wander why :duh: allen did an awesome job on my truck, but here lately ive been hearing of a few nelson guys swaping over to wheatley only because allen is just so dang busy.
I have had tunes from both Nelso and Wheatley. On my previous truck, I was running the Nelson tune, and could not have been happier, period. I know run Wheatley tunes on both my 06 Z71 and my 04 GMC. And could not be happier. Both are great tuners, and I truely hope that none of this turns into pissing matches. Charlie is one of my best friends and I know thats not what he wants.
IMO, if I lived closer to Allen, by far I would run his tune over Charlies, and vice versa. There are only 2 tuners out that that I would run and that is Nelson or Wheatley. My only deal is that with Allen in San Antonio, it was not convenient for me. I work a lot, and with my work, it is near impossible for me to get a day off, we have no paid sick-days, and have to plan my vacations a year in advance basically. So taking a day off to drive up there for a street tune or whatever is just outta the question.
Plus like someone else said, Wheatley doesn't have much experience in tuning Turbo/Supercharger setups. I don't know about wild nitrous setups, but he was tuning his old 97 Silverado for a 125 shot or something like that, so I know he does know about nitrous setups some.
Also, I'm sure that Nelson is much busier now, but I never had any problems getting a hold of him, but I haven't had my crew cab for about a year now either so.....
Both guys/tuners are A++ in my books and both are helluva nice guys.

I like the fact that if I need to I can meet up with Allen at SAR for some tweaking then run it down the track. :jump:
What about guys that don't live in Texas. I'm in Florida and I know my truck needs tuned better. But who do I choose?
Get a mail order tune from one of them. I fyou have the money, go with allen. You should call and talk to both of them.

I do not have any experience with Nelson's tuning, but Charlie sure thinks the world of his work.
Charlie has been helping me dial in my tuning for my cam over email, I'm trying to learn and he's been there for that as well. As soon as I start to jump ahead he's always there to say 'whoa, lets take our time on this and get it right'.
That said, I've also ran Wester's tuning... that was my only experience with mail order tunes, just never seemed right. Although he did make huge improvements for the way my truck ran, it was just too much of a headache mailing PCM's back and forth to Canada and back (and expensive).
I don't have anything negative to say about any tuner I've had experience with, they all do things a certain way and Alan sure does seem to have this all nailed down tight.
The more I read and learn, the more respect I have for these guys.

I guess the bottom line would be... if ya want a good street tune, you'll end up going with who's closer & more accessible to you. Is that fair to say? :cool:
I hate to say it on this site, but i get my wheatley tune tomorrow, and the sole reason i chose him over allen is because this post made him look impressive, and it was half the price. He is super easy to get a hold of, hellI have his cell phone # and hes willing ot talk whenever.
Well, this post may have changed my mind as well. Communication is a huge deal. What if my tune wasn't acting right? How long would it take to get in touch with the tuner to tell them what is going on? How long would it take them to get the PCM to me?? These are a few reasons why it's important that a guy is available as much as possible. Charlie is a super nice guy, and he gave me his cell phone # as well so I could contact him whenever I need. That to me is super customer service, and from what I've heard it is little things like that that could determine who I go with. Either way both sound like winners and this thread shouldn't diminish either one's credibility. :hshake:

Anyone know of any kind of results other than 1/4 times to show comparisons for any kind of tuner, nelsons, wheatleys, PCM4less, westers? There needs to be something to show who has more expertise in different fields of tuning. I guess location really is the biggest factor in determining a tuner, because I guess I have yet to see any one person be picked over another solely because they are better at tuning.

So true. He may have tuned it for 87 octane, also, to cover his tail just in case you went and bought a tank of cheap fuel.
That and the fact its pcm4less :nutz: :laugh: Kidding.
Allen has always Done his best to be friendly and professional in addressing my tuning needs. Besides , he gave us this great site too, so he wins!!! Charlie is a great guy too from what i gather chatting the web.
