I've pretty much decided on the motor I want for my truck (5.3). But I'm wondering what tranny to use. I plan on going turbo, maybe an STS kit (If it's possible on an OBS truck). I'm leaning towards either a built 4l60e or a mild 4l80e.
a stage 4 or 5 4L65E will do the job. Don't go cheap or you'll be doing it twice and paying way more than getting a good one the first time.

Thanks, that's why I'm asking. I don't want to be pushing any sort of horsepower through a transmission that won't take the abuse. I'm also thinking of getting a Gear Vendors unit, if that matters.
Do you really need a double overdrive? The 4L65E will give you a good overdrive ratio. The only reason for a double overdrive would be if you were running 4.88 or greater gears.

I'm not sure of the gear ratios for the 4l65e, but the 4l60e has a very steep first gear (3.06) and a huge drop off into second (1.63).

Im not sure that the housing of a 4L80E tranny will match exaclty up to a 5.3. Itll work but the may be gaps. Then again im not sure

Turbo would be badass. Frount mount or rear etherway BADASS!!
I can have your 4l60e built for about $1100. I have not had one of these built trannys brake yet!! We have been putting them behind some pretty badass turbo LS1's and 6.0L 408's!
Just give me or Billy a call.

I think FLT's 4l60E-3 with a Gear Vendors o/d should hold up to the power level I want to run.
ps. From what I have read, the gear ratios from the 4l60/4l65e are one of the reasons they fail...

Cool, thanks. But right at the moment, I still have the stock engine with a poorly built 700r4 (Could be the 3000 stall tc) in the truck.
I ordered me one of those FLT 65e's with the vac mod kit, that thing is pretty cool. Its a manual line pressure adjustment mod that works with the throttle. For example when driving around town easy on the throttle it will shift nice and easy but when you get on it you can have nice firm shifts, Plus if you ever have any electrical problems your line pressure will not be affected which can prevent tranny damage!
mine was like 3000 with shipping included! but that beats rebuilding 6 times!
