Cam on feel the noise! (? for Allen & TRT guys too)...

OK, cam isn't 'on' or in, but I WANT to feel the noise!

I've decided on putting my $500 toward a cam. Here are my options as I see them: 1.) I'm going to have to buy either a used one, 2.) find a great deal on a new one, or 3.) buy a new LS6.

With the LS6 there seems to be too much undecidedness about whether longer pushrods are really required, so I'd kind of like to steer clear of that (unless someone can convince me otherwise?).

There are some used Thunder Racing cams on line, but I'm still learning all of the numbers and what they mean, so yeah, I'm looking for advice as far as which cams are good and which to avoid.

This is my daily driver and I drive a lot during the day for work, so I don't want something loping to the point where it sounds like it's going to die. I'd like a nice mellow but noticeable lope that screams when you wake it up.

So, sock it to me - whattaya suggest?

PS: Allen & TRT guys - I'm open to having either of you install it, but I'd like the re-tune in person (unless you don't think it's necessary Allen?).

around 220 duration on a 112 or 113. I wouldnt go anymore than something like the TR224 on a 112.

You could always have a custom grind done, but with so many choices, I'm sure there is one waiting to be shipped to you.
Keep watching for used ones, that way you can do springs at the same time. You do need springs.

OK...sounds good...
Now how does that cam compare with the LS6? Should I even consider the LS6 or would it be simpler to just get a "name brand" one to take the guess work out of the push rod length of the LS6 (is that an issue or has that been resolved on here - seems to have been a lot of confusion)...

Does anyone know what the HP increases would be for an LS6 cam and say a TR 220?

nobody is guna ask about converter size? :eek:

loping to where it wants to die requires atleast a 3000 stall to keep it daily drivable. otherwise you have a cool sounding truck that runs like a geo metro, but dies everywhere :sad: also, its not just a cam that you can pop in. upgraded springs are the bare minimum for a cam like you want.

i recomend ALOT of reading(search button) and you can probably answer your own questions from there. dont be afraid to ask questoions.

All i did for my cam was call Allen. Allen will hook you up. I would definately get springs and pushrods though cause i wouldnt trust the stock ones at 6400rpm where allen put the red line. From 5000-6400 my truck sounds like a NASCAR&#33; My truck pulls hard from 2600-2800 till 6400. I forgot what my cam was but if you want ill find the cam card for you and give you the specs. You will definately want a bigger stall though. You will notice less low end power.

we talked to him about the stall and he knows it will be a dog off the line if he does the big cam and no stall.

I believe it&#39;s a 214/216 - .560 114.
I just changed the exhaust from a straight 4" pipe to a 16" magnaflow and 4" tip, but before the exhaust was swapped, it loped real good, VERY NOTICABLE&#33;
You really don&#39;t need a big cam to lope, it&#39;s mostly in the exhaust.
I did the same cam on a quiet exhaust and it was hardly noticable, but in mine, it lopes more than a 228cam.
It&#39;s a smooth lope, not a stuttery lope like a big cam has, it sounds very nice, I&#39;ll miss it.

Allen, was that a sales pitch for your cam? :laugh: (If so, yes, I&#39;m interested.)

If you, Billy, or Dustin could hook me up with something, I&#39;m ready to roll. Again, a used one is fine, I only have about &#036;500 to spend total including install (I realize it will be a little above that). I&#39;ve been looking on ls1tech, but still am not sure exatly what would work best. So if any of you guys spot something you think would do the trick (within the price range), I&#39;m all ears. I don&#39;t know which cam would fit the specs, but I would really like some more &#39;pop&#39; on the freeway for passing. And stuff.

If you&#39;re looking for something very soon, like in the next week or so, the cam won&#39;t be out by then.
The 224 cam is good, but you&#39;ll need a stall converter.
Personally, I like the ls6 cam, it pulls nicely in the mid and topend.

The stock rods should hold, but you&#39;ll def. need springs.

I used to think my LS6 cam didnt need a stall until I installed the 2500 converter and went back to the track. I dropped nearly .5 seconds off my 1000&#39; time, and .4 off my 1/8 mile. Puttin around town its not bad without a stall, but at the track you really notice the diff&#33;

It doesn&#39;t have to be in the next week. We&#39;re coming down to S.A. Friday - Saturday, so I was hoping to have a cam, get it installed, and a re-tune (if necessary?) during that trip. But that would require you working on the weekend which I don&#39;t expect (or recommend&#33;&#33;). So, no biggie. I just really need to talk to an expert to get some schooling on cams so I know what I&#39;m looking for. With everything I&#39;ve put into this in the last few months, a stall converter is a little ways off. Another option would be finding a great deal on both and just getting them installed as I get the cash.

In short, I need some schooling and hopefully your guys help in locating a cam that will work (I&#39;ll obviously be looking hard too once I know what it is i&#39;m looking for). Ayway...I&#39;ll talk to you tomorrow. Thanks as always for the help and your time&#33; :thumb:

Well i&#39;ll give you my take on it as I have run bolth, The LS6 for about a year and the TR220 112lsa for a few months now.

I thought the LS6 cam was real nice. Drivabilty was A+ even without a stall. Pretty much plug and play, easy to tune as well. No real lope and left me wanting more power. But real good upgrade from stock.

The TR220 doesnt really lope once you tune it right. Dont get me wrong it dont sound stock at all and pulls like a freight train. Kinda reminds me of a race car when you get on it :) So if you want lope get a cam with a split duration. I ran without a stall for a month. With no problems but was alittle sluggish of the line for my taste. I put a Fuddel 2800 stall in it 2 weeks ago. Wow what a difference of the line. Only bad thing I can say about the cam is tunning is a major issue and will drive like ass without or untill you figure it out... jmo

what would u guys reccomend more seeing as i prob wont get a stall atleast for awhile also i dont mind if it doesnt kick in till about 2000rpm becasue i usually drive in 3 around here because overdrive annoys me unless im on the highway i cant stand giving it a litttle gas and it does the "overdrive bog down" anyway the cams are tr220 112 or tr224 112

Lope doesn&#39;t really matter to me. My main concern is getting more pull. Slow off the line doesn&#39;t bother me either (for now). I want some more mod-range power.

Allen, you said if I went with a 224 I would need a stall. Is "need" a definite or am I just going to notice some loss down low?

Won&#39;t a larger overlap of about 116 or 118 help the bottom end out on the 224 cam? It would be a lot stealthier too.
