Yes, you can use your old transmission but it will be blown to pieces in no time at all. If you want to use it, have it rebuilt with better hard parts. The rear end will work, also. That's the same thing I have only you'll have a few more inches on me. You'll definitely want to put in a limited slip diff.
so ill just need like new gears for the transmission or what??? also, what kind of rearend do you have?
You'll need an adapter/spacer for the flywheel to use your old transmission unless you run a 99/2000 6.0L with the wide crankshaft flange. Check out www.hotrodlane.cc for some cool parts for the conversion. For the transmission I would suggest you get the internals upgraded to 4L65E parts with 5 gear planetaries and a Beast sunshell. Your third gear clutch set should be replaced with borg/warner clutches and steels from the 4L65E to handle the torque. You could just buy a 4L80e with the 6.0L engine and harness and be done with that part. You'll lose a few HP turning that big transmission but you'll have plenty transmission to do most anything you want with the engine.
cool. sounds like it might be cheaper to just get the new one by the time i pay for labor (i am no good with auto transmissions). for the rearend i can just get off swappin the guts then huh? also, how does it work when u get the new engine computer....arent there problems with gauges and brakes and transmission stuff? I know my truck has RWAL, will that work with the new computer?
oh yea thanks for the help
Yeah, just swap out the third member. The RWAL will work if you wire in the speedometer sensor pickup from the transmission into the little white box behind the glove box. That is the speedometer calibration unit plus it feeds pulses for the cruise control and antilocks. Use a stock oil pressure sending unit. If you had a tach you'll need a converter available from BakerElectronix.com. For water temp, drill out the passenger side head at the rear where the plug is screwed into the block and use a factory unit from your 93. The 1998 LS1 three wire unit must have the wrong resistance because my autotap and PCM don't agree with what the dash guage says so I would say go with the 93 sending unit.
so what kind of motor u got in that maroon truck?
nevermind......dumbass question
hey does anybody know the model name of the stock transmission on a 93 silverado? I was tryin to look up parts but i dont even know what the transmission is named
That is the 4L60E transmission. It's what was in mine unless yours was an exception to the rule, maybe an early 93.
gracias
so did pretty much everybody here drop your own motor or pay somebody to do it? i can put in a motor but i dont think i can do the Gen III cause theres so much wiring.......how much did it cost if you did?
Yeah, I did it all myself except the tune from Allen Nelson. I called around and found the complete LS1/4L60E with harness and pcm at a local salvage for just under $1600 out the door. Sold the 98 LS1 PCM on Ebay and got a 2002 PCM since it has a more aggressive processor and program. Rewired the 98 harness to use the 2002 PCM. Nelson can make you a custom harness with only a 4 wire installation to simplify the installation. You'll need the engine mount adapters, a high pressure pump such as the 255 or 340 LPH Walbro pump. An electric radiator fan is highly suggested or you can use the stock 6.0L engine driven fan and only lose a few HP driving it.
HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!& #33;!!!!! you got an ls1 and transmission for $1600?!?!?!?!?!
Yep, gotta shop around to find the deals. I can safely say I got the deal there. They didn't know what they had and I was glad to take it for the 1400 + tax they asked for.
so if i was puttin in a 6.0 and lookin for a transmission at the junkyard, what model truck (or car) should i get one out of?
Are you planning on doing a turbo or s/c? You'll want an LQ9 high performance model if no FI in the future. Otherwise any old LQ4 will do. The 4L80Es will all be the same.
Nah i wont be doin a s/c for a looooooooooong time so i just wanna get the cheapest tranny that wont blow for now.......which trucks have the ones that will work?
Any of them will work. All of the transmissions work excellent. If you go with the 60E you'll probably end up have to have it beefed up to handle performance usage. For a daily driver it will hold up just fine but what fun would that be to convert to the big 6.0 and not thrash it?
i mean the heavier duty transmissions i wouldnt have to modify........if im cruisin the junkyard, which truck (or car) can i pull one out of?
All the fullsize vans and trucks have the 60 or 80e's. 04 and 05s have the 65e, I believe. 3/4 and one ton trucks and vans have an option for the 80e. They cast the model number on the side of the transmission. It will be so much easier if you got the trans with the engine. The Camaro/Firebirds also have the 60e. I don't know of any rear wheel drive GM vehicles other than the Caprice, Cadillac and Roadmaster with a 60E. You'll most likely need the flywheel adapter for those, though, and they won't be built to handle the power numbers the 6.0L will be putting out.
thanks a lot.....i would buy them together but i think ill have to do it separate cuz im gonna have to buy the 6.0 new (no junkyards around here have used ones) but i dont have the cash for a new tranny too....
One of our site sponsors, HWYAUTO, has the 6.0L with transmission and I believe he's in Brownwood TX, not too awful far from you and will ship it to your door or a depot for you to pick it up. He's got good prices, also.
There is a 6.0L for sale on DFWLS1.com for $1800 with 30K on it if Austin doesn't have one available.
holy crap i had no idea you could get them that cheap!!!!! how do u find out about all these deals?!?!?!
Those prices have a touch of reality to them. The prices on Ebay are just stupid. Guys are asking almost new prices for take-outs on there and it's rediculous. I called Tennessee Auto Salvage and they had prices like Ebay and Street and Performance. It's amazing that people are paying those prices for used parts and they don't get crap for a warranty.
Yep...
$2100 - 5.3L/4L60E (complete), engine wiring & sensors, PCM, & ALL belt-driven accessories
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(USMC09 @ Apr 2 2006, 10:04 PM) </div>Got mine on Ebay over a year ago. $1650 shipped = 20,000 mile 5.3/4L60E, all accessories, driveshaft and other bits and pieces, no harness or PCM however. I picked those up locally at a wrecking yard for $200.Quote:

Got tired of tripping over it in the garage :whack: and finally got started on the swap just recently....
wow, i guess i need to start lookin in some other places.....i think the 6.0 will be harder to find though
Wow, I guess should have looked in Texas, I picked up an 05 5.3 , tranny, wire harness, computer, and crossover pipe with cats and all o2 sensors with only 5 miles on it for 2800.00 plus shipping during Christmas on Ebay. Here in the peep holes republic of caulifornia you can't touch any combo for under 4000.00, just the ls1 motors are going anywhere 2500.00 on up with high mileage.
Damn yall all found good deals......let me know if anybody sees something like that on a 6.0
-Gracias
I won a complete '98 T/A wrecked on ebay for $2050
Ok guys, the big question....Im gettin really close to buyin a motor- what do u guys think is better the 6.0 or the LS1? I was lookin at the wrong specs for the 6.0 and found out the older models dont have as much power as the LS1. The only thing I was worried about with the LS1 is its redline is so much higher and Ill be doing towing with it.
Since when is a higher redline a bad thing?
Either will work fine. A 6.0L with a 4" rotating assembly would be even better....6.6L
I was just worried about the higher redline b/c I don't wanna wear out my motor pullin a trailer on the highway.....does that even make sense? Also, the Ls1 will make more power than a 6.0 right?
The redline has nothing to do with how many revs the engine turns in every day driving. That only has to do with the final drive ratio....size of rear end gears, OD of tire and transmission gear used primarily. The redline is just the recommended maximum RPM the factory suggests the engine should turn. A higher redline usually suggests a better balanced engine.
