4X4 On The Track?

Ok, we've all seen it before with the hotrod powerstrokes and cummins, but I saw a guy take it to another level the other day. The last time I went to Ennis for Friday night test and tune, there was a dude in a newer Z-71. Looked like 16" Ralleye wheels off of a 95-96 truck. Hit the box, purged, we are talking massive shot of :nx: , then proceeded to melt rubber, and we are not talking about a regular burn out here ladies, this was of epic proportions. :burnout: Then he cut loose at the line. I'm guessing he launched in 4 HI, then went into 2. All this excitement with this truck, we didn't even see what he was running. A new Cobra is over there w/ slicks and other Bull @#%*, Anyway, they run and the truck blows the slowbra out of the water. No times at the end of the track, I was a little pissed but oh well. From what I hear the guy had a 5.3 w/ ls1 heads and cam, all the boltons you can think of and the :nx: . Big converter and big gearing all around. this thing was horribly good looking too. Has anybody seen this truck or one like it around?? Does anybody else do this either??

I was going to work my 1500 Z71 LT over (as in my sig) but opted not to for many reasons:

I need a stronger 4L80E trans vs the 4L60E (even fully built, with what I had planned would blow up a 4L60E).
the stock 8.5" wouldn't take a 2Hi launch on slicks
10.5" SF axle is $2500
E-Locker for the small IFS isn't available yet
Only avail in ext cab

I thought of doing a medium compression 422 around 9.5:1, stuffing 7psi into it, running dual stage nitrous also (75/125), obvioulsly heads/cam too. While you can get the motor to handle it, the trans and rear axle aren't up to the task.

I am going with a Duramax Diesel in the spring :devil: Better motor, MUCH stronger trans than the 4L80E, 11.5" rear axle, oh and 20+ MPG when cruising. Fully done will make about 750rwhp/1300rwtq...

I'd rather have some fat lady take a dump on my face than drive a Duramax, nothing against you, I just feel that GM needs to ask for the balls back from Isuzu and contract somebody else to build a diesel that is worth a crap.

I work on diesels for a living. And the Duratrash is a far cry from a worthy motor. I'd much rather run an old ISB Cummins or a 7.3 Stroke. These new fangled motors they are coming out with are so yuppie based and built that you can't stand to drive one.

I wouldn't drive a new 6.0 Stroke. We have 3 in our fleet and they are running like hammered dog shit. I couldn't even tell you how many times we've had to restrain from rolling them into a ditch and setting them on fire.

As far as a 5.9L Cummins goes, they are half way decent. If you get one before the 2003 Model. Yeah, the new body style is bitchin but, the "new and improved, quieter motor" is horseshit. A diesel is supposed to be super loud and ballsy. And these new ones aren't.

I have a pipe dream with GM, it may sound crazy, but it could happen.

Dodge is now owned by Mercedes right? So reallistically, they will drop Cummins and start to put Mercedes Diesels in the trucks. Then Cummins has no light duty work.....GM jumps on it and contract Cummins to build a super bad ass diesel that will blow the doors off of anything. Just an idea........maybe an designer at GM will read this and take a chance......

But running in 4hi down the track is sure going to eat up that drivetrain! I know a guy that is running a 427 LS1 derived motor in his lifted S-10 (that is kicking out 510hp right now and should be pretty close to 600hp by spring) and he runs 2hi for the drag strip as far as I know. On the dunes however he runs 4hi with paddles to absolutely spank the V8 Jeep buggy guys. :rock:

so how long do those engine last with all that compression, propane, nos?

they sure do run, but i'm sure they don't last 200K miles.

The "blue" truck is a 1998 Chevy S-10 ZR2 that was done by a guy that I know. He is an Advanced Vehicle Engineer for GM. He had it featured in a 4x4 magazine when it was black, had the full size front end conversion, a 4L80E trans, corvette seats, corvette stearing wheel, and had a "regular" vette motor in it. Then he was selected to go on the Ultimate Adventure trip put on by Peterson's 4WHEEL & OFF-ROAD. So he tore the whole thing apart a month before the trip, repainted it, put on a set of custom cut out flairs that he designed (the rules for the trip state that he needed 35's so he did the flairs to let the tires clear with his 5" BDS suspension lift), put in a roll cage, put moser shafts in the back axle, stuffed the diff's with the new eaton e-lockers, and stuck in the 427! The specs on the engine are: 427ci LS1 Engine, GM C5R block, 4.125 inch bore, BRC 11:1 pistons, Lunati 4-inch stroke crank, CNC ported ZO6 cylinder heads, GMPP Hot Cam, ZO6 intake, custom oil pan, custom headers, full 3 inch exhaust, and a complete Aeromotive fuel system. I am not sure what is next but he says that he has more stuff waiting to go in to add at least another 60hp to it. :burnout:

And if you like diesels I got another one for you. My one friend who did the lift on my truck is currently doing a full four link solid axle set up on his S-10 with a Cummins swap. He is using a 2001 engine with a 98 mechanical pump setup (instead of the electrical). It is backed up by a Silverado Allison trans. As for the transfer case he is still working on that but it will probably be a dual NP205 set up. Anyways he still has more of the frame to replace and the suspension to design but the engine is getting closer to fitting in there with a custom core support and she should be running again by spring.

Oh and before anyone says it, I ain't full of crap... the rigs exist. The owner of the blue one isn't a close friend of mine but I do talk to him when I need help with my truck. The detailed info that I have about it though is from the bio. that he gave in the Magazine. As for the black truck, he is a good friend and you will be seeing it in a magazine eventually but until then you have to rely on me for info.... lol :laugh: :cool:

If you change the oil in a diesel every 5000 miles and the fuel filter about the same it should last damn near forever. My buddies old farm truck is an old Ford w/ the 6.9L I believe, and it has 396000 miles on it. It doesn't even miss a beat. Doesn't burn oil or anything.

If you run propane injection and a bigger turbo, chip, exhaust, injectors, and all the other killer stuff, you can expect more than you think. If you don't hammer down everywhere you go.

Diesels will run forever it you maintain them. If you like to hear the turbo spool all the time then they won't run that long. Okay, what I meant to say was if your throttle happy and you keep your foot 6" from the front bumper when you drive, it won't last very long.

Not in a regular pick up anyway. Now, with a Semi, we have a totally different story. In the military, you should be able to piss in a can of water and put it in an old Detroit Diesel and make it run. Now, tell me that doesn't just kick major ass.

I'd love to see a CAT or a Detroit in a Regular size pickup.

Just wondering, so you don't like MB diesels? why would that be? I think you will find the new Hi PSI system is far better then the old systems in many ways one we get real diesel here in america. Europe has been running these diesel in trucks that see a lot more weight then here in america. Just wondering where your "thoughts" are comming from.

The US has become so stict on the emissions of diesels that they don't run good anymore. It's not that I don't like MB or their line of engines, it is how they go about their business.

It is either great fuel mileage and horrible emissions, or the other way around. Another factor that weighs in heavily is maintenance. If you are constantly having to maintain and repair one, it isn't worth all the money and the research. MB's have a break in period of about (depending on application) 5-10K miles. That is a long time to break in an engine.

I just remembered this, cost of parts. MB parts are unreal expensive. If you're running them in a fleet, it better be a multi million dollar corp. Take their transfer pump, $1900.00. That's at cost too.

Don't get me wrong they run great, but for how long? When you buy a diesel, you are looking at two maybe three things, Performance, Fuel Mileage, and Longevity.

If they run good for 6 years then they shit the bed, what the hell is the point? Your lease on the truck is probably 10 years anyway.

Nice to see your very opinionated. It's a good thing but remember you have never worked on a real benz with the fuel it was designed for. I could name tons of old benz motors without problems and very high mileage but you missed my point, all diesel will go to the new injection system so something must be good about it, companies don't just change over to lose power, reliability, and consumers. give me a break, i bet the new engines will last long, with lower emissions and better fuel mileage and maybe even lower operating costs.

It sure seams to me that diesels are getting more powerful and getting better mileage all the time. If the don't last 300K anymore than I guess that would be a fair tradeoff. Most sheetmetal wont last well past 10 years anyway so why should the rest of the truck.

How bout a cummins that runs 11.9's in the 1/4, is a 4x4 long bed extended cab with 35" tires, is daily driven, and pulls over 20 to the gallon running 80mph? Oh yeah, that's on the stock internals. All he's got done is some head work, a new cam, a BIG set of twins (around 80 psi and they are full spooled by second gear), a LOT of fuel, and a race built auto. No nitrous, no propane. Just good old fashioned #2 diesel. And that's not even the fastest street legal Cummins. The fastest street legal PSD is a reg cab, short bed, 2wd. His name is David Lott and he is in Houston. He's only running high 12's. There are a LOT more cummins in the 12's than PSD's. The fastest Dmax I know of is owned by ATS and is running a high to mid 12.

Diesels are bad mothers. You can dog em, rag on em, do whatever you want and they will keep on ticking. I know guys who are pushing over 800 hp and over 2000 lb.ft. of torque out of their engines, and have over 200K on them. They still run like brand new. The diesels of today are getting better and better everyday. The technology that is going into them is amazing. The variable vane technology on the Fords (and soon Dodge) is absolutely incredible (VGT has been out for a while in big rigs, but not in normal trucks). Each injector controls it's own timing and pulse width and stuff. Not only does that make for a very nice power curve, but the mileage and potential for power is down right amazing.

Your probably not gonna agree with me, but id do this, keep your truck and build that motor you want for it.

then swap in the 4L80, weld up the spider gears in the front diff (just remember to disengage 4wd before you make the turn at the end of the track, get that rear end that you want from the junkyard. They are only worth about $250 at the yard. I dont know where you got that $2500 from. The best way to get one would be to get one out of an older truck and do a disk brake conversion on it, it will still be cheaper than that high price tag.

Then go out there and kick the shit out of anything you want :cool:

Im not a big fan of diesels. . . unless they are pulling my race car or pulling some kind of toy somewhere. thats what they are for. Yes they can be made fast but im not a fan of the huge clouds of black smoke and all that crap

my buddie has a 02 single cab 4wd with a 10 inch lift on 36's, exhaust programmed and 150 shot and he ran a 14.1 in june at famso in bakersfield

If you want that kind of power, you are going to need at least a PSD. And if you want that kind of power reliably, your going to need a Cummins. There's a guy here in college station that is makin over 600 rwhp and doesn't smoke at all. He has a MASSIVE (capable of over 100 psi) set of twins and injectors that are unstreetable. Yet he tows 13K pound cattle trailers with not EGT problems and he doesn't smoke at all. It's all about how well you research your parts. This is on a stock 6 spd tranny with nothing more than a new clutch. This is with a stock head, bottom engine, rear and front end. He pulls over 25 to the gallon on the freeway.
