ls1 Not starting??????

ok guys I installed the ls1 into the 4.8's place, everything was used and an ls6 cam was installed. The starter will not crank with the key but using a screwdriver it will fire up and die... i have started it several times and have not seen the oil pressure rise yet and sounds very noisy, is this where the lifters and such have not pumped up yet? Would security be an issue with the starting, the security light in the truck is on at all times. I have never owned one of these trucks nor seen this one before the install so is this normal??

There was also a cadillac dash installed, would this be causing any trouble?

did you have the VATS unprogrammed or are you using the donor steering column and body module? also you might want to disable the ignition so you can prime the engine with oil.

What do you mean by "everything was used"? Yeah it sounds like the VATS hasn't been disabled. I wouldn't keep starting it until you get VATS disabled because yes all that noise is most likely your lifters not pumping up.

Be sure it's full of oil. 5.5 qts in the LS1 f-body pan. Drain it and refill after measuring if you must. Sometimes a wrong dipstick gets put in the tube when at a salvage yard. Did you keep the fbody oil pan? If so, you must use an fbody dipstick and tube. The oil pressure being low will not stop it from running. I don't even have oil pressure feedback going to the PCM in my setup and I get no codes and it runs and drives just like it did when I did have it wired in.

everything is original in truck besides the block and heads.....the 4.8 oil pan was used and I was told this would work and read correctly....I am not familiar with the vats system at all, is this something I must do? And how do i disable it? I have a single blue wire located right under the pcm that is not connected and I have yet to find where it goes, is this something I need to find first? And how do i go about priming the engine with oil pressure? I installed an ls1 in my camaro but had no trouble of this nature...once again thanks for everyones help

Okay, more info needed. Are you still using the 2000 truck PCM or the LS1 PCM?

I am using the truck pcm....once it is roadworthy then I am gonna take it to my tune man and Have it tuned....he said it would run with this tune but would idle really low and want to die

The VATS should not be an issue with the PCM. Depending upon how long the engine set not running, the injectors may be not spraying properly. Are you using the truck injectors or the LS1s?

too many unknowns here, please tell us exactly what you did, how did you wire it? how did you plumb the fuel lines, computer you said was stock?, im sure it needs to be programmed for the LS1 right of the bat. but im not sure how the security feature will work since your using the 4.8 pcm.

truck injectors....it has been setting for bout a year and a half..... I think the ignition may have been changed, if i can figure out how to disable the vats system then I can gewt the new key reprogrammed hopefully....my tune guy said the vats system is only letting it run for three seconds.



It is all completely wired as the 4.8 in the truck was...nothing is any different, all the same, tune will be set when truck is able to be driven.

It sounds like the VATS but if you didn&#39;t use the LS1 ecm then it shouldn&#39;t be a problem. Hey guys if he disconnected the 4.8 ecm or messed with the ignition switch would that affect the VATS?

Wait you said you are starting it by arcing across the starter I&#39;ll bet that is why the theft system is killing it. What do yall think?

I am not sure of the procedure to reset the security systems. Does your owners manual tell you what to do in that instance? It&#39;s probably the same thing you have to do when you replace a battery to reset the entire system. It&#39;s probably the body control module "BCM" that has you locked out.

I have no owners manual with the truck, this is a complete rebuild so I am in the dark&#33; ha ha
I had to do that in the ss, but had lost my notes, I will try that tonight...I think the key may have been replaced, but am not sure, this may be causing the vats system to be locked. I will definately try anything and everything to make this truck right. Thanks again for all of your guys help

Truck started with the key, finally found the problem....but still only runs for 3 seconds...which is the vats I believe. Do have some major trouble though....I am still not getting any oil pressure so I am thinking they may have put the o ring on the pick up tube wrong....so gonna tear into it and find the prob&#33;

Did you use a new O-ring? I didn&#39;t cuz the old one looked OK & I couldn&#39;t get oil press.

The most important thing is to get a coat of oil on the pump rotor. That helps to create a vacuum so it can pull the oil up. You could pull the little block off above the oil filter and pump oil in through there to prime the pump.

does that place have like a spout with a plug in it....is this what you are talking about? I put ten quarts of oil in it to flood the system and try to get it to seal and still yet did not work....is the way you are talking about any different? My tune man does strictly lt1 and ls1 and he said that it is prolly the o ring and he would charge bout 200 bucks to take it apart and get everything working correctly....this would keep me from messin with it. I could try your idea tonight if you can give me more details on just how to do that&#33; That would be greatly appreciated

did you replace it wen you didnt have pressure? and did this fix the prob?

I can&#39;t remember of there are one or two holes behind that cover. The one closest to the front of the engine should go to the pump, if I had to guess. Now, how to get oil in there is up to your creativity. If you have a pump type oil can, you may be able to use that to get oil to the pump. Just fill up the can and then pump your heart out until the can is empty. You&#39;ll probably have to wrap tape around the end or something like that to make it large enough to seal off and not leak out.

Like I said the old one looked pretty good so I was like what the hell shouldn&#39;t be a prob right... WRONG&#33; Go to your nearest GM dealer & get one it&#39;s like &#036;1 or &#036;2 you can do it yourself & save &#036;200 just take your time & follow the instr. on WWW.LS1howto.com & you&#39;ll be fine. :thumb:

Tore it all down last nite, wasnt a big job at all, ordered the new o ring today so hopefully get it back together tomorrow....ill keep ya posted
