Lifters And Cam Swap

Hey guys, I will be installing the TR220 112 in the morning. When I did the LS6 Cam I used the pen megnants to hold the lifters up. Well 6 months later I have either given away, left under hoods or just plain lost all but 3 of them. At $5 a pop this gets kinda expensive. I bought a lifter removal tool a while back for a job that never cam back.

My question is Can I use this on these engines with out removing the intake? Can I just pull them through the pushrod holes, I dont see why not? Any special way or position to put them back in, or other tips?

Hey man yoiu dont even have to pull them or hold them up. Just leave the pushrods in, give the cam a few rotations before you pull it, and the lifters will stay up! Makes it a ton easier! Just be easy pulling out the cam and sliding the new one in and your home free. Takes about 1 1/2 hours off of the install.

1.) you shouldn't need anything to hold the lifters up.

2.) Intake does not need to be removed because you still have no access to the lifters.

3.) Valley cover does not give you access to the lifters. see 2.

4.) pen magnets must be small enough to pass through the pushrod holes.

5.) when you remove the timing cover there are two holes that you can pass a rod down through the length of the engine to hold the lifters up.

nice list, i did forget about the rods after removing the timing cover, that can be done for good measure, we didnt even have to do that, they just stayed up.

I guess I should have looked a little better last time I was in there. This Tool slides down the Pushrod hole. Its kinda like a reverse claw, Then you push the center down to spred the claw and lift the lifter out, unless it has a flat top? You say the lifter wont fall? Quick spin and prayer and I'll be ok... lol

thats what we did, we even bumped the cam in there a few times and they didnt fall, i think you will be ok.

Are you guys gonna drive to Florida to help him dig those lifters out if they fall? Man that's risky! I wouldn't chance it, and I sure wouldn't tell anyone else to do it. :eek:

LMAO :hshake: ... I was just courious about this lifter tool I had... If it dont work I will just buy the other 13 pen megnants 13X5= &#036;65 if I can find that many on a sunday. We have different size tubbing in stock for brake and fuel line. I might just try make my own lifter holder out of that. Not a big deal I just wanted to know if it was posable to pull the lifters with out removing the intake and or heads.

Of all the poeple that have done LS1 cam swaps I don&#39;t remember ever hearing of one person that a lifter dropped out. The simple remedy is to use the rod down the block hole trick just for safe measure. Unless the engine is just plain worn out the lifter retainers will do the trick flawlessly. The holes you slide the rods down are not the pushrod bores. These holes are in the front of the engine block in the area around the camshaft sprocket, if you&#39;ve never seen them before.

I don&#39;tlike to take any chances when it comes to stuff like that. I have enough hell as it is. My luck every damn one of them would end up in the oil pan. Then I&#39;d really be kickin myself in the ass&#33;

Yeah I would use the wooden dowel method at least. I would be the 1st person you ever heard of having a lifter drop if I tried it without anything trust me, my luck sucks when it comes to this sort of thing. Why would you want to risk it without anything holding your lifters up? I can think of other ways to get thrills

Thanks for the replies guys. I&#39;ll be up and running if a lifter falls or not. I am still wondering why I would not be able to pull the lifter through the pushrod hole, What is stoping it from comming out?

You have to pull the heads to get to the lifters if you wanted to replace them.

I know you have to remove the heads to remove to 10mm nut to remove the basket/holder for the lifters and Im not trying to be a pain in the ass but what stops me from pulling the lifter out?

There are lifter cups(I think that&#39;s what they&#39;re called) that are bolted down over the lifters that won&#39;t allow them to come out. Go to LS1howto.com alot of good info there on cam & lifter installs.

The lifter loads from the bottom of the plastic retainer. The retainer has flats to keep the lifters from rotating in the bores or on the cam. Below the flats on the lifters they are round, so they won&#39;t pull through. You can pull them up against the retainer with magnets and hold them there if so desired but you cannot pull them all the way out without pulling the heads.

Makes sence... Any recomends on size tubing I can slide in the service ports on the block to hold the lifters. I read 1/4?

I&#39;ve never used the rod trick, only read about it. I just rotated the cam a couple of revs and pulled it.

Well you were correct that lifter remover tool wont even fit in the hole..lol Cam, Springs and pushrods in and running sweet&#33; I did hower have a problem with one of the lifters. It would slide right back down. I just stuck some 5/16 tubing up in there and it was all good. No sound clips yet I was to tired when I was through.
But I will say it dont lope very much at all. Glad I went with the 112 lsa and not the 114.
