H or X pipe, best location?

Hey guys, I'm about to do the exaust on my truck, and I need a little advice from somebody that has some experience in it.

I'll be running some Edelbrock shortie headers into true dual 2.25 pipes, no cats, and Magnaflow mufflers. I'm going to do some sort of crossover pipe aswell, but this is where I'm getting confused.

Where is the best place to put it? Before the mufflers or after?
Should I use the same diamiter pipe, or smaller? (or even bigger?)
Is it going to be worth paying the shop more for the X pipe, or will an H style be sufficient?

Motor is just a 4.3L, I'm going for maximum torque scavenging. Thanks in advance.

If your looking for maximum torque, why not go with long tubes?

As for the x-pipe, have you thought about a dual in/dual out muffler? i have one on mine wth 2.25" pipes and the banks are very evenly balanced. Its a Super 40 flowmaster.

I have not found any longtubes made for a 4.3L V6. If you know of any, please, please let me know&#33;

Currently have not purchased any of these parts yet, but I&#39;m looking at getting two single in/single out Mangaflows. Flowmaster mufflers sound terrible on the 4.3L, buddy of mine with Magnaflows sounds pretty good, on the other hand.

I wonder if anyone has ever designed an exhaust enhancer that is more or less an air scoop that is used to pull air through the exhuast system? I guess I need to get on the horn to the US patent office and register my idea, huh. :duh:

Wouldn&#39;t that cause a total loss of backpressure, severely hurting your torque numbers? Also it would cool the exaust gasses quite a bit, and cold gasses move slower.

For optimum performance 12-16 inches from the collectors or as close to that as posible is recomended for the X pipe. I would definantly go with an X pipe over the H pipe. I designed a tuned exhaust with an X pipe a long time ago. I do not understand why they are really just now gaining in popularity. :twocents:

Yeah, backpressure could be a thing of the past. Imagine, a naturally aspirated engine where the spent gases were not only pushed out of the head but drawn out also. I would think it would be best about 12" or so from the end of the tailpipe.

That is exactly what an x pipe does, now it should also be matched to the right size pipe diameter also. You use different sized exhaust to speed up and slow down exhaust gases. If you want torque you use a totally diff setup than if you want horsepower. To get the most out of your exhaust sytem takes a lot more than just a standard sized pipe. Yes an after market most of the time will give you better hp numbers but not what a truly tuned exhaust would for just your application. The manufactures could not make the money they do by doing one off for everyone. Not everyone wants the same thing from there truck or car. Similar yes but not the same thing.

Yeah thats why I made mind where the di/do muffler was no more then a few feet away from the end of each tailpipe, and the way a flowmaster is setup, the gases are balanced perfectly for each bank when they get there.

:thumb: See that setup works for you and what you are wanting from your exhaust system. It usually takes a little bit of trying one product and another and you find a balance of what you are wanting. You may give up a few top end hp numbers to run an exhaust that is a little quieter or loose a little bottom end torque because you like the sound of a louder exhaust. The main thing to watch out for though is the bigger is better complex. Not always true.

You are exactly right&#33; There are different ways to balance the exhaust system, the MAJORITY of people just think the exhaust is going to give them 30,000 rwhp and drive around like they are badass when they really lost power going bigger than they needed to. The muffler I have is 2.5" inlets and outlets, so going back to 2.25" pipes after the muffler makes sure I keep that backpressure&#33;
