Okay guys, I don't know which. I am wanting top line, bullet proof 4l65E, or at least the best I can get. I like the FLP level 5, but pricy. Second and third are close.... FLT Level 5. He's got a sale going on. I've actually talked to Rock On transmission, cheapest but used parts, at least the 5 pinion planets.
I know its been asked a 100 times.... what do you guys think?

Dave at Rock-On sounds like a real upstanding guy. I went to his shop and visited with him for about an hour and he really sounds like he knows his stuff. Used 5 pinion planetaries can't be too old and usually won't have much if any wear on them. Rock-On has transmissions all over the world and Dave also is a live tech support person on LS1TECH and puts his reputation on the line daily by putting his name on the website every day. That sure puts his reputation out there in the wide open for everyone to see. Read up over there to see what they are saying about his units and any others you are considering.
To bad you were not in San Antonio. I could help then with a local guy. I would follow Red and Bud's advice.

I'm putting an FLT Level 4 in the 6L, h/c ext truck I did. I'll keep you updated on how it turns out.

About 5 miles west of Denton on hiway 380.
Yep I hab my mine mad up on a Level 5 4L60 from Rock-On, but now since I've read some on FLT they seem to be good builders to, It's kind of a toss up between the two company's but I believe I'm still going to try Dave at ROCK-On cause he is lil cheaper and said he make me good deal on a Precision Stall.
let us know, im spending my tax money on upgrading or buying a new tranny , ive got the same Qs as you. :duh:
What did the shop look like? Modern? Organized? I agree they come highly recommended and Dave and company CS is outstanding. I just came away from the conversation a little uncomfortable. Got the impression of an old school shop with parts laying everywhere and sorting through them throwing together transmissions with parts that LOOKED okay. There are numerous posts at Tech about the great trans. Mostly by just a couple guys.Quote:

Pretty well organised by my standards. He has to keep every thing convenient for him to work at his level, Dave is an amputee and missing half of one leg. He has two sections of a business mall that he works out of in the Denton area and then he has another place in Duncanville TX where his transmission dyno is located. He was talking about moving his Duncanville store to the Denton area, also, to save travel time. BTW, Dave dyno tests all of his performance transmissions before you get them.
i dont want to steal kysilverados thread, but i would like to ask while we are talking trannys what should be the absolute items i need for a bulletproof( or strong as can be) 4l60e for my 04 silv z71, ill be running 10# of boost , :cool: i talked to a local guy who i trust this afternoon to build mine before i blow it, he told me no prob and would build it to as strong as the alum parts would stand, i just want to know what i should insist on having for internals and best quality, if this interupts ky's thread i will start a new one but there are alresdy a ton of em, thanks -tim
ky, how do you like that 2600 stall for all around driving /performance?
Contact Dave at Rock-On. He will sell you his bulletproof kit that beefs up all the transmission internals that often break. He'd rather do it for you but he will sell you the parts and pieces to help you build a killer transmission. He does a lot of R&D and has a shop that builds everything custom for him.
It's great. Darn near perfect balance for performance/driving in my application. It is a subjective thing. I'm gonna get a dyno sometime soon. If the torque curve says 2800 would be better suited I might re-stall and risk a little drivability.Quote:

I can't say much about towing. I've not done any serious towing with it. Maybe 2000 lbs with my trailer and bikes/quads. If you ask PI about towing they will probably say stay with the stocker.Quote:

I have blown up 4 4L60/65s now and am sold on the 4L80 especially on forced induction trucks. Its not to hard to do and its tough as nails. My last fully built 65 with 5 pinions, red eagle, torque drive and all hardened internals lasted 15 miles with my 6.0 radix. Took out everything from the converter to the output shaft...including blowing the back off the case. All this on a 2-1 downshift.

i dont drag race. more of a street devil. i just got sick of replacing expensive hard and soft parts. plus this new motor of mine makes 410tq at the tires at only 2000rpm. I smoked the clutches with the sotck 4.8 and then broke the sunshell after i put on the radix. i smoked the clutches again with the 6.0 and then killed it later that day....only the clutches and the beast sunshell survived. every other hard part was junk. the turbos are a little easier on the trannys. if you do want to build a mean 60/65 i can help you with some part lists.
