Electric Fan Help!

last week i installed the 05' E-fans and 34" radiator. So far they have worked great. It is hooked up with only the passenger side fan operating on high. I ordered the 145A alternator in advance because of the extra electrical drag that the fans will cause when they kick on, BUT they kick on and off every 5-10 seconds and it drains my Volt gauge down 50%, ( Are THEY SUPPOSE TO DO THAT?)my lights dim at night and it seems like the fans aren't hooked up right. I know i did them right, hell You really can't hook them up wrong. I replaced the stock 105A alternator today with 145. The extra drag just about killed the 105A( the bearing was squekin' like crazy). It made the bearing go bad in it in like 5 days. I am afraid that the fans will do the same to the 145A, because it doesn't seem to be that much better than the 105A. It keeps the battery charged better, but kicks down the gauge 50% like my old alternator.

I need some techncal help before i jack somethin' up.

I have read or heard that you mite have a bad relay or it is wired wrong.If you can get a wiring diagram,check your connections. USE2BFO had this problem.check out electrical post by his user name.The drain sounds like a relay is plugged in wrong or not working :duh: good luck and keep us posted.

It drops about a one volt when the fans kick on. But, both fans don't work only the passenger side. it was about 12 volts and when fans are off it is like 14.5 volts. it just drags down the alternator badly.

I just switched the relays around, same result. They come on and off every five seconds and alternator goes to about 50%.

WHY IS IT PULLING MY ALTERNATOR SO FAR DOWN????
I have no clue what to do???? :bash:

If the circuits are protected with a thermal breaker, sounds like you have a short and it cycles on and off as the breakers cools and resets.

That sounds about right, my buddy said every time the a/c cycles my fans come on then off.
Just don't know how to fix it?

I recommend changing the wire from the alt to the battery cable junktion It is to small for the amps the 145 puts out. Try a 4 gauge cable.

You should be able to use it as-is, just remove the grounding wire from the a/c circuitry and move it to pin 33.

The low speed trigger wire on pin 42 needs to run to pin 42 and the green line on the green a/c connector that way the fans run on slow at operating temp or when the a/c is on. The high speed relay would be triggered by pin 33 only and you would get high speed fans only when above the trigger value programmed in the PCM. You could also jumper another lead on the high speed relay to run into the cab so that you can manually turn the fans on in stop and go traffic.

You may have to wire a diode into the individual ground circuits to prevent false feedbacks from other grounds but that's simple enough. A diode is a one-way check valve in the electronics world, allows signal to travel 1 direction only.

I replaced the 8 gauge wire on the alternator with a 0-2 gauge wire and i saw a little difference, but didn't fix the problem.
My fans come on when i turn my heat on and a/c on? this is a mess i regret even buying the radiator, fans, and harness, (just angry that when you follow directions like your suppose to and it still won't work!!!)
I think allen should help us, but i have been playing phone tag with him for 2 months now.

If you're going to be at the dyno shop tomorrow I'll look over what you have.

Do you think this is something that allen should warranty or fix, I paid like $100.00 or more for the harness and if it needs to be modified i think he should do it, what do you think? By the way thanks for the diagram i wil compare it to mine. :thumb:

Depending upon how you have it wired may be all the difference. Your pos and neg supplies to the fans should be on the battery or as close to it as possible. The additional load the fans put on the power lead from the battery is most likely what is causing your surges. The main wire coming from the battery to the fuse block was not designed to handle the load of the fan motors. I think he has the right wiring process. We'll see tomorrow.

This wiring harness diagram is assuming that pin 42 ground triggers at low temp on and when pin 33 ground triggers, pin 42 is still grounded at high temp turn-on. This circuit will turn the fans on low when the a/c is turned, even at startup, using the second relay to trigger the ground for the first.

Fans will be off until low temp trigger 42 grounds in the pcm unless the A/C is turned on. If A/C is on, then fans are on low. The only time you will get high speed fans is if you have a hot radiator over 210 or whatever the PCM is set at and the PCM is setup to trigger high fans.

The A/C green labeled connection would best be connected to a wire that is energized when the A/C is turned on in the cab, not one that cycles with the compressor.

Yes, I have already built and bench tested this.

I must admit, this is pretty close to the diagram AKLIM posted with some changes.

Wow Thanks RED you don't even know i really appreciate you taking this project on for us, I only have 3 relays though? and allen's instructions only have a wire for pin 42?

I am going to try to get a hold of Allen and see if he will do the adjustments? :thumb: I haven't drove my truck in 3-4weeks i want to have it done right?

Hey guys just talked to Allen, REDHeartbeat has a great idea but, allen said it will only work on 04' and up model trucks,. He says we have them hooked up right? I asked for some other solutions. Right now we have one fan on 12V High, I mentioned maybe 2 fans 6V low speed, he said he would send me a diagram on how to wire it and should lower the drag on the alternator. When i get it from allen i will post 1st thing.

Allen said he tried it on earlier models and would not work.

You can always go and buy an old idiot light type water temperature switch to trigger the high temp fans. Just have to find a place to put it in the water stream somewhere. Go to Orielly's and look in their sensor book to find one with the correct metric threads. Cross reference your stock temp unit to see what size thread is there. The book will tell you what temp they switch on. You might get lucky and find one designed to turn on electric fans at a lower temp. You can screw it in on the passenger side head closest to the firewall if you don't have something there already.

I'm saving my lunch money for a tune. I brazed together a fitting that would hold a low temp and high temp switch, to operate the fans untill I can get a tune. I installed it in the heater hose next to the water pump and it works great.

Thats what the diode is for in F1 gound. I may have drawn the it in the wrong direction, I can't remember how it is wired on the truck.

What high/low switches did you use? PN? Where'd you get them? I'll be running off my 2002 F-body PCM so I have full control. 99-04 truck guys might need the number for the high temp switch at least.

I used Jet brand temp. switches I don't know the part # but I got them for a 92 vette Low temp is 195 and high temp is 215.

Still no Allen, Still no Diagram?
