First question:
Is it pretty safe to assume an '04 truck w/ a 10-bolt diff has a 8.6" ring gear size?
From what i can tell, GM went from 8.5" to 8.6" rgs sometime between 1999 and 2000.
Does that sound correct?
Second question:
Would an 8.5" rgs posi (G80) from an OE 10-bolt be compatible w/ the 8.6" rgs 10-bolt?

Starting my research on upgrading my open diff to limited slip...
From what everyone says and everything I read, the 8.5" gears are compatible with the 8.6" gears and vise versa.
As I recall, 8.625" lol Stuff from the 8.5" swaps over without a problem.
But NONE of us are fans of the G80... it really is a piece of crap. Unlocks around 25mph... doesn't really like to lock around corners. The locking counterweight likes to break taking the entire rear with it.
Used Auburns are a better buy but can't be rebuilt in the truck. :sad: I have an Eaton in my F150 and it's a killer LSD. You could pick up an older 30T clutch style LSD from other vehicles...I think Impala SS and the similar cars had real ones but light preload springs (150-200lbs).
i need a posi too any suggestions???? also i dont think im goin new... im gonna go with the ol' junkyard approach i think so any specs? i think its a 10 8.5

nah mines def not posi... i wanna get like an eaton or somethin.... also do u suggest 4.10s or u think i should keep my 3.73's and also if i change my rear diff do i hafto change my front???? gear wise?
I'm wanting to change from my 3.73's to 4.10's. 2002 Silverado, factory posi. Are these 10 bolts?Quote:

In a 4x4 you have to upgrade front and rear diffs. PITA unless you know someone that does them. Z71s should have a 4.10:1 STOCK due to weight issues, if you have the extra cash or are spinning bigger tires... I'd go for it. Consider even a 4.56:1 It's just 100rpm more on a 33" than a 31" on a 4.10:1.
But in a 2x4 I don't think there's enough difference to warrant the cost. I have 4.10:1 gears in my F150 now and I don't think I'd do it again if I had the option. I'd have just gone with the Eaton.

The G80 is manufactured by Eaton, and I like mine, but I guess I'm not as "hardcore" as some of those around here. Here's Eaton's page:Quote:

yeah all 3/4s have 4.10 i havbe 3.73
4.10:1s are only a $50 option on Z71s, why mine didn't have that but it came with everything including Ride Control is beyond me.Quote:
