New and overwhelmed by info.

Hi, I'm new to the site and am here for help. A little background, I'm an OEF veteran with time for a project now that I am out. I have a 1984 chevy shorted with stock 305 ci and a 350t. I bought a 2001 camaro 5.7L aluminum long block with hot cam installed. I am wanting to simply convert it to carb for now as I don't want EFI period.have tried to pull together resources for a basic foundation to do this swap and conversion, but I am overwhelmed by the information around. I need a link or links for a guide to start gathering parts. Accessory Brackets, motor mount adapters, torque converter, well everything. I don't have any hot rod shops around so this isn't as easy as bigger locals. All I have found for my year of truck is 5.3 swaps and I don't even know if that would be universal to the 5.7 I have This is my very first swap and I picked a daisy of one to start with, but I did my duty and now have some free time, which I already have the engine so no giving up or until my head explodes, which after researching I think I'm losing information. Any help would be nice of you. And thx in advanced.

You'll need a stall to go with that cam for best results. May want to consider a 700r4 to get an overdrive and lower 1st gear.

you'll need a simple fuel pump because no provision for mechanical pump on the LS and maybe a regulator and I'd run a 750 Holley

Oh man an immediate response, thank you chevydillan for that. Tomorrow I'll start doing that research. Have you done this kind of swap I'm doing? And my c10 is a non a/c truck.

I just finished a swap into a 97 truck. No a/c will make things a little easier. I'd say run a truck accessory drive set up as they are easier to find and cheaper when you do.

Dillan what about a carb to run with that and the msd timing and curve with the pills? Is that something to get? And I saw the msd box you posted but what about the male connectors, I should say I do not have any wiring for the engine if that matters. Or is it a matter of just tuning the carb with that msd ign. Control box?

For a carb is go with something like this. I'm sure some will say 750 is to big but I think this would work great.
Of course I don't know your goals with the truck. I'm just going off the hot cammed ls1.

Okay, nice. My goal Dillon, is to have a nice street truck not a cruiser, I don't want as a dd, and def. not a track day truck, so I'd say with what the engine has is enough I think it may be putting down between 400-450 I hope, I'll have to wait to see on dyno when after I build. But that is the hp range I would hope to get. I just hope with the info I get for you and anyone else can look at this thread and say I'm new but this is exactly what I am looking for. why are you going carb? is it because your used to carbs and afraid of FI? if so, so was i. but after doing the swap and learning about fuel injection, its honestly the way to go. WAAAAYYY more benefits over carb... and if your motor is already set up for fuel injection, just run with it and learn it. especially since carbs are being "phased out" most especially if its a daily. if your an old school carb tuner/tinkerer for racing, then cool. but daily or new, just stick with the pcm. get a scanner and your life will be much simpler. just my two cents...

Just so you know the 5.3 and 6.0swap is exactly the same as the 5.7 swap. All the ls motors are the same size on the outside.

Thank you for that info I am learning, so I appreciate not being talked down to. That was part of my initial question, is it a universal swap for the 5.7 as the 5.3 or the 6.0. I knew from research it should be but was not 100 percent sure of it, so thank you @gagliano.

Now for EFI I want simple for now , and with the modern conversion parts that are out my hp gains will be at most 10-15hp less. Also I want simplicity and not ecus and harnesses. This will not be a DD, but wil be a street rod kinda setup for the weekends, and is a project for me and my dad since he has never done this and I too, wee don't wanna fight about what goes in there. He just rebuilt gmc Sonoma and a gmc full size that both have all the ecu harness etc. I'm sure this will be a break from those trucks.now the benefits of carb and EFI and my main concer is getting this engine in and making the wheels go for now . I would like info though on how to do everything as I am learning an new to this, but want to so my research before I do my project, and order parts then test down the truck. @kewijay

Hey gagliano, thx for the info again. I have a non ac 84 c10, what LS TRUCK brackets for accessories do I need? I know it's alternator, water pump, idler n tension, but do I need the power steering pulley bracket? Sorry in advance for such a simple question for most but I am making sure I do my homework with the help of others as well as researching.

You'll need a truck water pump, truck accessory Bracket. It holds the alternator and p/a pump. I believe you'll also need a truck balancer as they are different than the cars. Everything bolts on the drivers side of the engine. The tensioner will bolt to the water pump on the pass side. Just try and get it all from the same truck that way you'll be able to get all the bolts and stuff. Keep whatever p/s pump is on the truck LS bracket.

Oh, yes p/s. Not sure how new you can get but for sure 99-04 will work.

Dillan, I don't need to do anything for the throttle cable to the pedal do I? Also can you explain to me about the fuel pump you listed, as far as why I need it and where and how to I install that.i can't find anything related to the fuel pump how to? Also I wan to run 350t, what adapter and hardware to I need to adapt the engine to that tranny? Also, after researching can I change my tank on my 84 to a newer chevy to make it easier to hook up to the engine? Thx man.

That p/s adapter looks good and cheap too. You'll be able to run the LS truck pump and your factory pressure hose

Your throttle cable should be just fine. You'll probably have to get a new throttle cable bracket for the 4150 style carb but that's no biggie.

Leave your tank in. No reason to switch to a newer tank with the pump in it unless your going FI.
You'll need an aftermarket electric pump to supply fuel to the new engine because there are no provisions on the LS engine to run an mechanical pump like you have now.
You just mount the new elect pump somewhere on the frame near the tank and splice it into your fuel line, get a new hose from where the fuel line currently attaches to your old fuel pump and run that to your new carb.
The new electric pump will be powered by a switched key on power and you can get as elaborate as you wish with relays and cut off switches.

You don't necessarily need the fuel pump I listed, just a good reliable electric in-line pump. Carb can only handle about 6-7 psi of fuel pressure so don't go overboard.

You can use the power steering pump that comes with the LS motor. My hoses from my 1992 truck connected right to my 5.3 pump. There are some trucks that had a hydroboost power steering pump. Those have 3 hoses going to pump. The only thing withe the LS1 motor if you use truck accessories one of the alternator/p/s pump bracket holes on the block isn't drilled.

Okay cool. So after a lot of research, for the the ls1 carb conversion, the prices the ease of install, I have decides to order almost everything made for this swap minus the 4l60e, and the ls accessory brackets tensioners, pulley system and crank pully, from schwanke. I spoke with a guy who at their shop, that this is their specialty along with engines of the lsxxx. Great price for everything harness computer fuel system headers plates hardware , then specific for my truck I ordered the painless harness to gut out my truck and install, last guy spliced into everything when he owned it, it's easier and cleaner for install. So far all of that is cheaper than just a factory harness and computer plus a tune compared. I really wanted to carb but it's just not gonna happen.

I think you'll really like fuel injection.

Okay I have a dilemma though should I use the ls truck series accesory drive and brackets etc? even though I putting this in my 84 c10 ,the engine is a 01 camaro ls1 alum. , can I use that accesory drive etc system from the car if I fine the whole system or etc. or do I have to use the truck ls ones?

+1 on the fuel injection. theres a slight learning curve at first but once you get just the smallest concept of it, you will love all the perks of it. plus the LS was designed to run that way.

anyway, from all the searching i did, it seems most of the time you stick with either one or the other for accessories. there might be 1 or 2 things that are interchangable but for the most part they are not. that includes the intake and TB as a car intake/TB will hit the upper hose on the truck water pump.... so whatever you can get cheaper id say.

So I can get the same year accessories for the camaro/trams am from '01 minus a cable operated throttle body and be fine? I'm not doing drive by wire period, just gonna change the throttle body to cable operated as per the gurus at schwanke.
