To make a long story short, I put a cam in my truck and my old man found out and made me pull it. Now I have a ticking noise. I checked my lifters and retorqued them and still the sound. I think i didnt install the plugs right. I dunno and im dying. Bought new plugs today and gonna install tomarrow...hopefully thats it but deep down i think its somethin else. Any ideas? :bash:
i say put the cam back in :smile: eventually it will be time to tell the old man to shove it....that is unless he's making the truck note :whack:
what size cam was it and is it for sale?

If it was an aftermarket camshaft it was most likely ground on a smaller base circle and required you use longer push rods. If you used the longer push rods on the stock cam you have the valve train running out of whack. You must have the right length push rods to keep it all running correctly. Stock cam equals stock pushrods. If you ran the stock push rods with a smaller base circle cam you may have damaged the lifters, rocker arms or valve stems.
Bumpity bump is right and he isnt payin for the truck, hes payin for my education. :cry: and i did use all the stock components with the stock cam and hardenedpushrods with the lunati custom grind (216/224 .558/.558 114lsa) Sale pending. Bought new plugs,gonna install them tomarrow. $40 for freakin plugs.....owweee!
Damn, son, did they see you coming with a pocket full of extra cash! Go to Oriellys and buy NGK TR55 plugs. They work great and you can afford to change them every 15k miles or so.
Yeah get you a Z06 cam, I installed one in my Z71 and love it! The top end is awesome! If you know the sound of your truck you will be able to tell a change in the way it idles, but to the untrained ear nobody can tell.

Yup. I went ahead and had to chase my threads on the plug holes. I finished it last night and i have no more ticking. Just the sound of the headers. Got everything done right. I removed all of the plugs and the belts and used a coat hanger in the spark plug hole to feel for the piston as I manually rotated my motor via the Crank bolt and a breaker bar. When the piston was close, I went ahead and using a 14mm thread tapper, chased the threads. I threaded the chaser in there a few times with my hands to get all the caca out of there so we will not have this again. After that I used a vaccum cleaner hose with a homemade atatchment that I necked down into a 2ft peice of 1/4" plastic tubing. I sucked the majority of the crap out of the motor and alot of it was removed with the tap. It was not a fun experience at all.But the ticking noise is gone. HMMM
Oh yeah, gonna buy the cam sometime this week. My pops' ear is not trained to my truck because we also have a 2004 cclb 2500HD with a 6.0 and also a 2003 suberban with an L59 that sounds totally different as well so the cam shouldnt be a problem to hear. When I bought my plugs, the guy at the ZONE told me that NGK was for ricers and also that they were going out of business. Hmm. Had to settle for autolight. Damnit all. Thanks again you guys. :jump:

do yall not have O-Reily's around? here theres an O-Reily across the street of any autozone and O-reaily is better. autozone seems like a rycers store here lately. ill go there if i ever need fake exhaust tips, funny colored L.E.D's or stickers. they serously have a "ricers isle" in the autozone by my house :doh: . i dont trust too much technical info from either stores employees though :thumbdown:
That's REALLY weird, because I live near Atlanta, and the Mexicans ALL seem to flock to the AutoZones here, too. It must be someting with AutoZone that draws them in. They rarely go to Advance (I think O'Reilly's and Advance are part of the same company). I usually keep my white english speaking ass OUT of AutoZone. NGK plugs came stock on every Honda I've ever had. You will never find that in my chevy.Quote:

No joke! Its hard to find a parts counterperson that you can trust for ANYTHING. I used to work at a parts store, and for my age I consider myself fairly car savvy. I can tell you, you dont need to know a damn thing about cars to work at one of these places. **Funny Story** I also worked at a Honda dealership..I was just a light duty tech, but I was changing the oil on our parts truck..(A 5.3L Z71) and I asked the parts guy in house for a filter and he gave me a 5.7 one. I litteraly argued with him over it because his "Book" listed the wrong number. :tantrum: To some parts guys...if it aint in the book, it aint out there. lol. Sorry for long post. Had to share.
I have Orielly's around here and I know people that work there and they are usually helpful yet ignorant about the newer motors. I only go to AutoZone for diagnostics and in this case sparkplugs because it was easier to get to and I was not in the mood to have to cross traffic to get to Oreilly. I really cant stand the Zone either. We also have a TexMex auto salvage around here.
Yeah the Oreillys guys here have no clue about these newer LS-style motors. They still swear by the 350 and think the 5.3 and like motors are jokes. Needless to say I dont go there anymore. :thumb:

Seems to be more common that I would like. The whole, 350's are better thing. I've had em, there great, they certainly have passed the test of time, but hey...gotta roll with the times, and I say in with the new!! :rock:
