Engine Swap
Hey guys Im looking to buy an OSB and swap in an LSx. Ive read through the stickies and How To's on here and on FSC. I want a daily that can do 11's. What i cant figure out is which motor is best suited for this it seems like a lot of guys doing 5.3 and 6.0 swaps, but what is the best setup for a daily that can 11's in the 1/4? Thanks.

6.0. 5.3s will definitely do it. But might as well start with as much as you can.
-
Im assuming the 6.0 is the LS2 motor???? And the 5.3L is the Vortec 5300??? And what do you mean by start with as much as you can, is there another engine your suggesting?
-
He's saying do it right the first time and start with with the bigger displacement engine (6.0) and yes you can get a LS2 6.0 but you could also save a Lot of money to spend on other mods by purchasing a good ol iron block 6.0 out of a 3/4 ton and building it up

No Kidding I found a donor motor 6.0 from an Escalade for $2400. How much internal work would it need? Will the stock motor hold enough boost to run 11's and still be reliable enough to be a daily if I need it to be?
-
$2400 is pricey IMO. And yes, stock block will hold. you won't need much boost to get into 11's if you do the proper supporting mods with sticky tires.

You should be able to find a 6.0 for under 2k. Seen a few go for under 1k.
The only motor mods you should do to go 11s safely under boost are the following:
Rod bolts if you plan to exceed 12lbs of boost.
Gap the piston rings if you plan to exceed 18lbs of boost.
Valve springs should be upgraded to yellow springs if keeping the stock cam or an aftermarket set for a bigger cam.
Trunion upgrade on the rockers is excellent insurrance against failure.
Hardened pushrods if you plan to shift above 6400 rpm.
Head studs if you plan on more than 18lbs of boost.
Also ls7 lifters are a nice upgrade to the weaker stock lifters.
These motors are stout and many have taken them far with no mods, but I listed the most common failure points. Of course you will need fuel, trans, tuning, and reared mods to support the power, however it is very achievable to have street able safe 11s.
I think a well built 6.0 on about 8-12lbs could get you there if not crank up the boost.

Excellent. I will keep looking then. I found those prices on car-parts.com near my area in Charleston, SC. Also I found an 91 1500 RCSB w/ 151K on it how do I tell what tranny and motor are in it?? Also it was carbed, is this a replacement engine?
Would the stock 6.0 be able to do 11's on 8-10 pounds of boost with supporting traction mods? This is sounding very do-able guys. Thanks for the replies.

Doing some reading on WIKI and the VORTEC 6000 has an LQ4 and LQ9 and it says that the LQ4 can be either aluminum or iron. 99-2000 LQ4's had cast iron heads. And that the LQ9 has a higher Compression Ratio and 10 more HP. Which of the variations are you guys reffering too and how do I know which variation I have? VIN? Casting number? ...

Ok. Been reading almost all day.lol And im having a hard time figuring out what needs to be done wiring wise. It seems like with all the options on the OBS and the engine its super confusing. I can splice and cut a harness no problem but I cant figure out (from reading) what I need to make the OBS harness work with the 6.0 engine and its harness and keep things like ABS, Cruise Control etc. Im reading a lot of LS threads and the "OBS to LS swap" thread but I want to do the VORTEC how applicable is this to my planned swap? And is there a thread or site with clear instructions regarding the wiring?
Also Tranny wise. Seems like people are swapping 4l60e or building their 700R4 I think its called. I want to have an auto that will do 11's on boost. But, Im going to get the motor and tranny in and working, then boost after that. What are my best tranny options for an automatic?
Also theres no talk about rear ends, will the rear end in an early 90's OBS be okay until the boost comes?
