Everyone on Gmfullsize.com seems to have jumped on this oil catch can deal. But that forum is a real band wagon forum. If one person has it the rest need to that's why all their trucks look the same. I've seen a few videos of high HP LS motors running one. I know they supposedly keep oil out if your intake or whatever but is it really necessary on a daily driver?
Gmfs is bunk! At there meets a bullet antenna is cool!! I was uncool the one j went to cause I had a cut stocker antenna
^^^ agreed lol and most that show up to a meet are all mostly stock. The Cali boys do it big but that's about it. If your SAAB rolled up at a meet I'd drool over it.

i'm doing a FI 6.0 why do you need a catch can? i ask because i have a boosted 5.7 and i dont have one and its been running fine for years now. are the LS engine just different and need one?Quote:

yea they burn a qt of oil well atleast my 6.0 does..they blow the oil back into the intake
The more RPM you turn at cruise, the more oil vapors get pulled into the intake.
So catch can good idea or no?

Everyone has their own take, but here is mine. You never want positive crank case pressure. And the more power you make the more likely you will have a higher risk of blow by and cause positive crank case pressure. (specially FI) An oil "catch can" is not a great idea. It really should be an oil accumulator instead. The can should be plumbed to some vacuum source to make sure you always have Pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) so on forced induction, you either have to run an exhaust scavenging setup, or put it in your air filter or close to turbo inlet. The can just serves as an accumulator. Some just vent crank case to atmosphere, and will work for most. But for big power I'd reccomend some sort of Pcv. Just my .02
Yeah it seems they have a write up on it but there is a debate which is the best can to use.
well worth the .02's on another note i didnt decide or figured i needed a catch can until i was putting over 500 to the wheels, i feel this is the power where one maybe needed, i was blowing oil everywhere underhood through the breather cap, even blew the filter off lol, before then it would lift the valve cover :(Quote:

for a DD, you're better off with a closed system than a breather setup. it basically runs like stock except it's putting less-oily air into the intake. that was the way it was explained to me by a couple catch can manufacturers. i installed one last week on my boosted LS1 & it's already proven to keep some oil out of my intake & intercooler. it'll work just the same on a N/A build. you install it in-line between the PCV valve & the intake return & it condenses the oil vapors out of the return air. have you ever looked at your TB blade or inside the intake? that oily residue is from the PCV routing oily air back to the intake to be burned. over time, this just gunks up your manifold, combustion chambers & pistons as well as causing a less-complete burn & timing having to be pulled - robbing you of a little power.
short answer: yes, any vehicle can benefit from a catch can. you can also make your own for $20-30 at home depot. there are a few DIYs floating around.
So call me stupid but I've taken many intakes off NNBS trucks and can't visualize in my head where this would all be rigged too. All there is is a hard plastic like going from the cable cover to the top of the intake. Correct? Hell I can't remember I've slept since then
On the NNBS trucks the PCV gets it air from the intake tube. NBS trucks it comes from behind the throttle body. And then to passenger valve cover, then from driver's side valve cover to intake manifold/pcv valve. Catch can goes in between drivers side cover and manifold.
I use an Elite Engineering can, mounts to passenger head. I run one line from passenger valve cover to can and out to inlet of Procharger. The other valve cover is routed to an inline paper filter and into the Procharger. Back on the dyno today with #11psi and new SW long tube, off road and duals. Been working for me, hope this helps.
